Ayodhya Kanda

अयोध्याकांड

The Ayodhya Kanda is the second and longest book of the Valmiki Ramayana by sarga count. It tells of Rama's interrupted coronation, his exile with Sita and Lakshmana, the death of Dasharatha and Bharata's refusal to rule.

What happens in the Ayodhya Kanda

Dasharatha decides to crown Rama, and Ayodhya rejoices. The maid Manthara turns Kaikeyi against the plan, and Kaikeyi demands the two boons Dasharatha once promised her. Rama accepts exile calmly, and Sita and Lakshmana insist on going with him.

The exiles cross the Ganga with Guha's help, visit Bharadwaja at Prayag and settle on Chitrakoot. In Ayodhya Dasharatha remembers killing the young ascetic Shravana and the curse that followed, and dies of grief.

Bharata returns from Kekaya, condemns his mother and goes to Chitrakoot to bring Rama back. Rama will not break his father's word, so Bharata carries his sandals home and rules from Nandigram.

Themes

The Kanda is a study of duty under pressure: a father bound by a promise, a son who obeys without anger, and a brother who refuses a throne he did not earn.
