Kaikeyi
कैकेयीQueen of Ayodhya; mother of Bharata. Also called Daughter of Kekaya | Dasharatha's favourite queen.
Kaikeyi was the favourite queen of Dasharatha and mother of Bharata, whose two boons — demanded under Manthara's influence — sent Rama into fourteen years of exile. One of the Ramayana's most complex and human figures.
Who was Kaikeyi?
Who is Kaikeyi?
Kaikeyi was the second and favourite queen of King Dasharatha, princess of Kekaya, and mother of Bharata. Beautiful, brave and once the most loving of Dasharatha’s wives, she became, through a single demand, the instrument that sent Rama into exile and set the whole tragedy of the Ramayana in motion.
The two boons
In a long-ago war, Kaikeyi had accompanied Dasharatha into battle and saved his life, and he granted her two boons to be claimed whenever she wished. She asked for nothing for years. But on the eve of Rama’s coronation, her maid Manthara poisoned her mind with fear — that once Rama was king, Kaikeyi and her son Bharata would be nothing. Swayed, Kaikeyi claimed her boons: that Bharata be crowned, and that Rama be banished to the forest for fourteen years.
A mother’s mistake
The demand destroyed Dasharatha and horrified the kingdom. Yet Bharata, far from being grateful, was appalled by what his mother had done; he refused the throne and placed Rama’s sandals upon it. Kaikeyi, seeing the ruin she had caused and her own son’s grief, was consumed by remorse for the rest of her life.
Her place in the Ramayana
Kaikeyi is one of the epic’s most human figures. Tradition is divided: some see her as the villain whose jealousy caused untold suffering; others point out that without the exile, Rama could never have fulfilled his purpose of destroying Ravana — making Kaikeyi, in a strange way, an unwitting instrument of the divine plan. She remains a study in how love, fear and a single reckless wish can change the course of everything.
