Uttara Kanda
उत्तरकांडThe Uttara Kanda, the later book, tells the history of Ravana and Hanuman, Rama's reign, Sita's exile and the birth of Lava and Kusha, Sita's return to the earth and Rama's final departure.
What happens in the Uttara Kanda
Agastya visits the new king and tells the history of the rakshasas: the founding of Lanka, Ravana's birth, his boons, his conquests and the curses that sealed his fate. He also tells how Hanuman got his powers and why he forgot them.
Rama hears that his people doubt Sita, and sends her away. Lakshmana leaves her near Valmiki's ashram, where Lava and Kusha are born. Shatrughna kills Lavana and founds Mathura.
At Rama's Ashwamedha in the Naimisha forest, the twins sing the Ramayana, and Rama recognises his sons. Sita returns to the earth. Years later Time comes as an ascetic, Lakshmana leaves his body, and Rama walks into the Sarayu with his people and returns to his divine form.
A note on the Uttara Kanda
Many scholars regard the Uttara Kanda, like parts of the Bala Kanda, as a later addition to Valmiki's core poem. It is part of the traditional text and is presented here in full.
