Valmiki Ashram

वाल्मीकि आश्रम

Why is Valmiki Ashram sacred?

The Bala Kanda opens with Valmiki at his ashram near the Tamasa river, where the death of a krauncha bird moves him to speak the first verse. Brahma then asks him to tell Rama's story in the same metre.

In the Uttara Kanda, Lakshmana leaves the pregnant Sita near this ashram, and Valmiki takes her in. Lava and Kusha are born here and learn the Ramayana from the poet himself. Bithoor near Kanpur is the most widely followed identification.
