The story
How long did Lord Rama live, how many years did he rule, and how long ago was he born? These are among the most-asked questions about Rama, and the Ramayana gives surprisingly precise answers, though they belong to the vast timescale of myth rather than ordinary human years.
How many years did Rama rule Ayodhya?
According to the Valmiki Ramayana, Rama ruled Ayodhya for eleven thousand years. The figure appears in the very first canto, which foretells his reign with the words dasha-varsha-sahasrani dasha-varsha-shatani cha, “ten thousand years and ten hundred years”, that is, 10,000 + 1,000 = 11,000. This long and perfect reign is Rama Rajya, the age with no poverty, untimely death or injustice that became India’s enduring image of ideal rule.
How long did Rama live?
The Ramayana unfolds in the Treta Yuga, the second of the four world-ages, when human lifespans are said to have been immense. Rama’s fourteen-year exile, the war with Ravana and the eleven-thousand-year reign that followed all belong to a single life. By the epic’s own measure, then, Rama’s earthly life lasted far beyond any modern span, the long reign alone fills eleven millennia. These numbers are the scripture’s, offered as a sign of a divine age rather than a historian’s date.
How many years ago was Rama born?
There are two very different answers. In the traditional, scriptural reckoning, Rama was born in the Treta Yuga, which in strict Puranic chronology ended many hundreds of thousands of years ago, a sacred, cosmic timescale, not a calendar date. A modern astronomical attempt was made by Pushkar Bhatnagar in his 2004 book Dating the Era of Lord Ram: feeding Valmiki’s description of the sky at Rama’s birth (the Sun in Aries, Jupiter and the Moon in Cancer, and the rest) into planetarium software, he arrived at 10 January 5114 BCE, roughly 7,100 years ago, with the exile around 5089 BCE and the return around 5075 BCE. This dating is popular but debated, and most academic historians regard the Ramayana as sacred literature rather than a datable chronicle. Both answers are worth knowing: one is the timescale of devotion, the other a modern effort to read the epic’s stars.
How did Rama die?
Rama did not die as mortals do. The Uttara Kanda tells that when his time on earth was complete, Yama, the lord of time, came to him, and Rama walked into the river Sarayu at Ayodhya in a final jala-samadhi, shedding his human form and returning to his eternal form as Vishnu. Lakshmana had already departed before him, and Sita had earlier returned to the earth after raising their sons, as told in the story of Lava and Kusha.
The immortals he left behind
Before departing, Rama blessed two devotees to remain in the world as Chiranjivis, the ever-living: Hanuman, so that he might dwell wherever Rama’s name is sung, and Vibhishana, the righteous brother of Ravana whom Rama had crowned king of Lanka. In this sense Rama’s story never fully ends: the Lord returned to Vishnu, but those closest to him were given to time itself.
