Why is Madhupura (Mathura) sacred?
The sages of the Yamuna ask Rama for protection from Lavana, son of Madhu, who carries Shiva's trident. Rama sends Shatrughna, who waits until Lavana leaves the trident at home and kills him.
Shatrughna founds the city of Madhura there and rules it for twelve years. It is the same city later known as Krishna's birthplace.
