Lanka is Ravana's golden island city across the southern ocean, where Sita is held captive and where the great war is fought.

Why is Lanka sacred?

The Uttara Kanda tells that Vishwakarma built Lanka for the rakshasas, that Kubera ruled it, and that Ravana seized it from him. Hanuman finds the city dazzling with gold and palaces, searches it at night and finally finds Sita in the Ashoka grove.

After the war Rama crowns Vibhishana king of Lanka. Many sites in Sri Lanka carry Ramayana traditions, though some scholars have argued for locations in central India.
