Who was Anasuya?

Anasuya's name means free from envy. Valmiki says her austerities once brought rain and made the river Mandakini flow during a drought. When Sita arrives, Anasuya teaches her about a wife's devotion and is delighted by Sita's answers.

She asks Sita to tell her the story of her birth and marriage, and Sita recounts the bow ceremony in Mithila. Anasuya's gifts stay with Sita, and she wears them even in Ravana's captivity.
