Chyavana is a Bhargava sage who leads the ascetics of the Yamuna banks to Rama to ask for protection from the demon Lavana, and later warns Shatrughna how Lavana killed King Mandhata.

Who was Chyavana?

Chyavana is famous in the Puranas for regaining his youth through the Ashvini twins. In the Uttara Kanda he comes to Ayodhya with other sages to describe the terror of Lavana, son of Madhu, who devours ascetics.

When Shatrughna sets out to fight Lavana, Chyavana tells him the story of Mandhata so that he will strike while Lavana is separated from his spear.
