Durvasa is the quick-tempered sage whose sudden arrival at Rama's door forces Lakshmana to break Rama's command, leading to Lakshmana's departure from the world. Long before, he had foretold Rama's sorrows to Dasharatha.
Who was Durvasa?
In the Uttara Kanda, Sumantra tells Lakshmana that Durvasa once prophesied to Dasharatha that Rama would be parted from Sita and his brothers. Near the end of the epic Durvasa arrives while Rama is speaking privately with Time and threatens to curse the whole dynasty unless he is admitted at once.
Lakshmana chooses to give up his own life rather than let the kingdom suffer, and goes in. Rama, bound by his word, renounces him, and Lakshmana walks to the Sarayu.
In the Valmiki Ramayana
Durvasa appears in 2 sargas across 1 Kandas.
