Kashyapa is the great progenitor sage, father of the gods, demons and many other beings. In the Ramayana he is Diti's husband in the story of the Maruts and one of the priests at Dasharatha's court.
Who was Kashyapa?
Kashyapa, son of Marichi, has many wives, among them Aditi, mother of the gods, and Diti, mother of the daityas. Vishwamitra tells Rama how Diti, with Kashyapa's blessing, performed penance for a son who would kill Indra, and how Indra cut the unborn child into seven, who became the Maruts.
Kashyapa is also named among the sages of Dasharatha's assembly and in the lineage Vasishtha recites at Rama's wedding.
