Mithila
मिथिलाMithila is King Janaka's kingdom and Sita's home. Here Rama breaks Shiva's bow, and the four sons of Dasharatha marry the four princesses of Mithila.
RegionJanakpur, Nepal
Why is Mithila sacred?
Vishwamitra brings the princes to Mithila for Janaka's sacrifice. Janaka shows them the great bow of Shiva, which no king could even lift. Rama strings it and it breaks with a sound like thunder.
Dasharatha arrives from Ayodhya and the weddings follow: Rama with Sita, Lakshmana with Urmila, Bharata with Mandavi and Shatrughna with Shrutakirti. Janakpur in Nepal is the traditional capital.
