Who was Khara?

Khara rules Janasthana with his brother Dushana, placed there by Ravana. When Shurpanakha comes to him bleeding, he first sends fourteen warriors, then marches himself with a vast army despite ominous signs.

Rama sends Sita and Lakshmana to a cave and fights alone. He kills Dushana, the general Trishira and every soldier, then kills Khara in a long duel. The destruction of Janasthana is what first brings Rama to Ravana's notice.
