Who was Vayu?

Hanuman is called Pavanaputra and Maruti because Vayu is his father, born to the vanara Anjana. In the Uttara Kanda, Agastya tells how the baby Hanuman leapt at the rising sun, and Indra struck him with the thunderbolt. Grieving, Vayu hid in a cave and the breath of all creatures stopped.

Brahma healed the child, and every god gave Hanuman a boon. In the Bala Kanda Vayu is also the wind god whose anger bends the daughters of Kushanabha, and in the Yuddha Kanda he advises Lakshmana how to kill Atikaya.

In the Valmiki Ramayana

Vayu appears in 5 sargas across 4 Kandas.
