The Ashwini Kumaras are the twin physicians of the gods and the fathers of the vanara brothers Mainda and Dvivida, who fight for Rama in Lanka.

In the Bala Kanda, the gods father mighty vanaras to help Vishnu on earth, and the Ashwins father Mainda and Dvivida. The twins are healers in the Vedas, and in the Puranas they restore the youth of the sage Chyavana.
