Why is Mahendra mountain sacred?

The search party under Angada reaches the sea and despairs, until Sampati tells them Sita is in Lanka. Jambavan reminds Hanuman of his powers, and Hanuman climbs Mahendra, pressing the mountain down as he springs into the sky.

He returns to the same mountain with news of Sita. Earlier, in the Bala Kanda, Parashurama leaves for Mahendra after his bow passes to Rama. Mahendragiri in Tirunelveli is linked with the leap; Mahendragiri in Odisha with Parashurama.
