Who was Sampati?

The fasting vanaras speak of Jatayu's death, and Sampati, who has not heard of his brother for ages, asks to know more. He tells them how, long ago, he and Jatayu flew toward the sun and he shielded his brother with his wings, which burned away.

He then reveals that he saw Ravana carrying a woman south, and with his keen sight sees Sita in Lanka, a hundred yojanas across the sea. As the sage Nishakara had foretold, his wings return as he helps Rama's cause.
