Vishwakarma is the architect of the gods. He built the city of Lanka, fathered the vanara Nala who built the bridge to Lanka, and created the feast with which Bharadwaja honours Bharata's army.
Who was Vishwakarma?
In the Uttara Kanda, the rakshasa brothers Malyavan, Sumali and Mali ask Vishwakarma for a city, and he gives them Lanka on Mount Trikuta, a city he had built for Indra. In the Bala Kanda, he fathers Nala to help Vishnu on earth.
Because Nala inherits his father's skill, the Ocean tells Rama that Nala can build the bridge. Bharadwaja also calls on Vishwakarma to build halls and pavilions for Bharata's army in the forest.
In the Valmiki Ramayana
Vishwakarma appears in 3 sargas across 3 Kandas.
