Who was Varuna?

After three days of fasting on the shore Rama receives no answer from the Ocean and draws his bow in anger. The sea boils and the Ocean appears, explaining that its depth is its nature, but promising to bear whatever Nala builds.

Rama's arrow, already drawn, is turned toward a northern land, which becomes a desert. Varuna's noose is also among the divine weapons Vishwamitra gives Rama.

In the Valmiki Ramayana

Varuna appears in 7 sargas across 2 Kandas.
