Who was Yama?

Narada provokes Ravana to challenge death itself. Ravana fights his way into Yama's kingdom and frees the souls being punished there. When Yama raises his staff to kill him, Brahma intervenes, since his boon protects Ravana from the gods, and Yama withdraws.

Yama also appears among the gods who praise Rama after Sita's fire ordeal.

In the Valmiki Ramayana

Yama appears in 6 sargas across 2 Kandas.
