Marichi is a mind-born son of Brahma and the father of Kashyapa. He should not be confused with Maricha, the rakshasa who became the golden deer.

Marichi is one of the great progenitor sages and stands near the top of Rama's lineage: Brahma, then Marichi, then Kashyapa, then Vivasvan the Sun, then Manu. He is named among the sages who visit Rama in the Uttara Kanda.
