The story

How old was Lord Ram, and how long did he live? Questions about Lord Ram age — his age at birth, at his marriage and exile, during the war with Ravana, and his age when he died — are among the most-asked about the prince of Ayodhya. The Ramayana answers them not with a single number but with a life measured in distinct stages, and with a reign counted on a scale that is more symbolic than human.

How old was Lord Ram? (Ram age at each stage)

Rama was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya on Chaitra Shukla Navami, the day still celebrated as Rama Navami. Tradition holds that he was about twenty-five years old when he left Ayodhya for his fourteen-year exile in the forest, accompanied by Sita and his brother Lakshmana. The years of exile, the abduction and search for Sita, the alliance at Kishkindha and the building of the bridge to Lanka all fall within that period, ending with the defeat of Ravana and the return to Ayodhya.

Rama’s reign and his age when he died

After his coronation, Valmiki’s Ramayana describes an age of perfect rule — Rama Rajya — said to have lasted eleven thousand years. This enormous figure belongs to the epic’s sacred scale of time rather than to an ordinary human lifespan, and it is best understood as a symbol of an ideal reign rather than a literal count of years. On the question of Ram age when he died, the tradition does not record a death in the usual sense at all: at the close of his reign Rama walked into the river Sarayu and returned to his original form as Lord Vishnu, of whom he is counted an avatar.

Why the Ramayana gives no single number

Because Rama is remembered as a divine avatar, the texts weave together two kinds of time: the human stages of a prince’s life — birth, marriage, exile at about twenty-five, and the war that followed — and the vast, symbolic reign that marks him as more than mortal. For a closer look at that reign and the departure into the Sarayu, see our companion page on how long Lord Rama lived. Different recensions of the Ramayana and later retellings vary in their details, so the ages given here reflect the most widely followed tradition rather than a single fixed account.
