The story of Vrinda and Shaligram
The Padma Purana tells of Vrinda, the devoted wife of the asura Jalandhar, whose purity made her husband invincible. To defeat him, Vishnu took Jalandhar’s form, and when Vrinda’s vow was broken, Jalandhar fell in battle with Shiva. Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become a stone, the Shaligram, and gave up her life; from her ashes grew the tulsi plant. Vishnu blessed her: no offering to him would be complete without tulsi, and he would marry her every year. The Brahma Vaivarta Purana tells a parallel story in which Tulsi is the wife of Shankhachuda. Read the full account and a home vidhi in Tulsi Vivah: the story of Vrinda and puja vidhi.
