Devshayani Ekadashi 2027 falls on Wednesday, 14 July. On the Ekadashi of the bright half of Ashadha, tradition holds that Vishnu lies down on the serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk and enters four months of yogic sleep (yoga nidra). This begins Chaturmas, the holy four months when weddings and other new beginnings pause and devotees take on vows of discipline, until Vishnu wakes on Dev Uthani Ekadashi in Kartik. It is also called Ashadhi Ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi and Harishayani Ekadashi.

Devshayani Ekadashi 2027 date

Devshayani Ekadashi 2027 is on Wednesday, 14 July 2027 (Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi), with parana the next morning within the Dwadashi tithi. Chaturmas then runs until Prabodhini Ekadashi on Wednesday, 10 November 2027.

Why Devshayani Ekadashi is observed

The Puranas describe Vishnu’s four-month rest as part of the rhythm of the cosmos: the preserver withdraws inward during the monsoon, and the world turns to inner practice. A related story told in the Bhagavata and Vamana traditions links the sleep to King Bali: after Vishnu, as Vamana, sent Bali to the netherworld, he promised to stay with Bali as his guardian, and the four months are said to be that time. The Ekadashi mahatmya tradition also tells of King Mandhata, whose kingdom was saved from drought when he kept this fast on the advice of the sage Angiras.

How Devshayani Ekadashi is kept

  • Fast: devotees avoid grains and beans, keeping a fruit-and-milk fast or a stricter one.
  • Puja: an image of Vishnu reclining on Shesha is worshipped, often laid on a small bed, with tulsi, yellow flowers and lamps.
  • Chaturmas vows: many give up a food, keep extra prayer, or study scripture for the four months.
  • Pandharpur Wari: in Maharashtra, lakhs of Varkari pilgrims who have walked for weeks reach Pandharpur for the darshan of Vitthal on Ashadhi Ekadashi.

The meaning of the day

Devshayani Ekadashi opens a season of inward focus. When the outer world slows in the rains, the four months become a time to simplify, pray and prepare for the renewal that comes with Vishnu’s awakening. Also see Nirjala Ekadashi and the full Hindu festival calendar.
