Who was Tara?

Tara senses that Sugriva's second challenge means he has a powerful ally and begs Vali to make peace with Rama. Vali refuses and is killed. Tara's lament over his body is one of the most moving passages of the Kishkindha Kanda.

Later, when Lakshmana storms into Kishkindha furious at Sugriva's delay, Tara meets him, explains that the armies have been summoned and soothes his anger with tact. She is counted among the five revered women, the Panchakanya.
