बालकांड, सर्ग 37: कार्तिकेय का जन्म
Agni carries Shiva's seed to the Ganga, and from it Kartikeya is born and nursed by the six Krittikas. He becomes the commander of the gods' army against the demons.
अग्नि शिव का तेज गंगा तक ले जाते हैं, और उससे कार्तिकेय का जन्म होता है, जिन्हें छह कृत्तिकाएँ पालती हैं। वे दैत्यों के विरुद्ध देवताओं के सेनापति बनते हैं।
तप्यमाने तपो देवे देवाः सर्षिगणाः पुरा ।
सेनापतिमभीप्सन्तः पितामहमुपागमन् ॥
tapyamāne tapo deve devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ purā |
senāpatimabhīpsantaḥ pitāmahamupāgaman ||
बहुत पहले जब शिव तप कर रहे थे, तब देवता और ऋषिगण एक सेनापति की इच्छा से पितामह के पास गए।
Long ago, while the god was at his penance, the gods and the hosts of sages, wanting a commander, went to the Grandsire.
ततोऽब्रुवन् सुरास्सर्वे भगवन्तं पितामहम् ।
प्रणिपत्य सुरास्सर्वे सेन्द्रास्साग्निपुरोगमाः ॥
tato'bruvan surāssarve bhagavantaṃ pitāmaham |
praṇipatya surāssarve sendrāssāgnipurogamāḥ ||
तब इंद्र सहित, अग्नि को आगे करके सब देवताओं ने भगवान पितामह को प्रणाम करके कहा:
Then all the gods, with Indra and led by Agni, bowed to the holy Grandsire and said:
यो न स्सेनापतिर्देव दत्तो भगवता पुरा ।
तपः परममास्थाय तप्यते स्म सहोमया ॥
yo na ssenāpatirdeva datto bhagavatā purā |
tapaḥ paramamāsthāya tapyate sma sahomayā ||
हे देव, आपने पहले जिन्हें हमारा सेनापति बनाया था, वे परम तप करते हुए उमा के साथ तप में लगे हैं।
Lord, the one you once gave us as our commander has taken up supreme penance and is practising it with Uma.
यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं लोकानां हितकाम्यया ।
संविधत्स्व विधानज्ञ त्वं हि नः परमा गतिः ॥
yadatrānantaraṃ kāryaṃ lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā |
saṃvidhatsva vidhānajña tvaṃ hi naḥ paramā gatiḥ ||
हे विधान जानने वाले, लोकों के हित के लिए अब जो करना है उसकी व्यवस्था कीजिए, क्योंकि आप ही हमारी परम गति हैं।
You who know what must be done, arrange what should be done next for the good of the worlds, for you are our highest refuge.
देवतानां वचश्श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः ।
सान्त्वयन्मधुरैर्वाक्यैस्त्रिदशानिदमब्रवीत् ॥
devatānāṃ vacaśśrutvā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ |
sāntvayanmadhurairvākyaistridaśānidamabravīt ||
देवताओं के वचन सुनकर सब लोकों के पितामह ने मधुर वचनों से उन्हें सांत्वना दी और कहा:
Hearing the gods' words, the Grandsire of all the worlds comforted them with sweet words and said:
शैल पुत्र्या यदुक्तं तन्न प्रजास्यथ पत्निषु ।
तस्या वचनमक्लिष्टं सत्यमेतन्न संशयः ॥
śaila putryā yaduktaṃ tanna prajāsyatha patniṣu |
tasyā vacanamakliṣṭaṃ satyametanna saṃśayaḥ ||
पर्वतपुत्री ने जो कहा कि तुम अपनी पत्नियों से संतान उत्पन्न नहीं करोगे, वह सत्य और अटल है; इसमें संदेह नहीं।
What the daughter of the mountain said, that you will not beget children in your wives, is true and unfailing; there is no doubt.
इयमाकाशगा गङ्गा यस्यां पुत्रं हुताशनः ।
जनयिष्यति देवानां सेनापतिमरिन्दमम् ॥
iyamākāśagā gaṅgā yasyāṃ putraṃ hutāśanaḥ |
janayiṣyati devānāṃ senāpatimarindamam ||
यह आकाश में बहने वाली गंगा है। इसमें अग्नि एक पुत्र उत्पन्न करेंगे, जो देवताओं का शत्रुदमन सेनापति होगा।
Here is Ganga who flows in the sky. In her Agni will beget a son, a commander for the gods who will tame their foes.
ज्येष्ठा शैलेन्द्रदुहिता मानयिष्यति तत्सुतम् ।
उमायास्तद्बहुमतं भविष्यति न संशयः ॥
jyeṣṭhā śailendraduhitā mānayiṣyati tatsutam |
umāyāstadbahumataṃ bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ||
पर्वतराज की बड़ी पुत्री उस पुत्र का सम्मान करेगी, और वह उमा को भी प्रिय होगा; इसमें संदेह नहीं।
The elder daughter of the king of mountains will cherish that son, and Uma will hold him dear; there is no doubt.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कृतार्था रघुनन्दन ।
प्रणिपत्य सुरास्सर्वे पितामहमपूजयन् ॥
tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya kṛtārthā raghunandana |
praṇipatya surāssarve pitāmahamapūjayan ||
हे रघुनंदन, उनके वचन सुनकर कृतार्थ हुए सब देवताओं ने प्रणाम करके पितामह की पूजा की।
Hearing his words, joy of the Raghus, all the gods, their purpose served, bowed and worshipped the Grandsire.
ते गत्वा पर्वतं राम कैलासं धातुमण्डितम् ।
अग्निं नियोजयामासुः पुत्रार्थं सर्वदेवताः ॥
te gatvā parvataṃ rāma kailāsaṃ dhātumaṇḍitam |
agniṃ niyojayāmāsuḥ putrārthaṃ sarvadevatāḥ ||
हे राम, धातुओं से सुशोभित कैलास पर्वत पर जाकर सब देवताओं ने अग्नि को पुत्र उत्पन्न करने के लिए नियुक्त किया।
Going to Mount Kailasa, adorned with minerals, Rama, all the gods appointed Agni to beget a son.
देवकार्यमिदं देव संविधत्स्व हुताशन ।
शैलपुत्र्यां महातेजो गङ्गायां तेज उत्सृज ॥
devakāryamidaṃ deva saṃvidhatsva hutāśana |
śailaputryāṃ mahātejo gaṅgāyāṃ teja utsṛja ||
हे अग्निदेव, देवताओं का यह कार्य पूरा कीजिए। पर्वतपुत्री गंगा में वह महान तेज छोड़िए।
God Agni, carry out this work of the gods. Release the great energy into Ganga, daughter of the mountain.
देवतानां प्रतिज्ञाय गङ्गामभ्येत्य पावकः ।
गर्भं धारय वै देवि देवतानामिदं प्रियम् ॥
devatānāṃ pratijñāya gaṅgāmabhyetya pāvakaḥ |
garbhaṃ dhāraya vai devi devatānāmidaṃ priyam ||
देवताओं को वचन देकर अग्नि गंगा के पास आए और बोले: हे देवी, इस गर्भ को धारण करो; यही देवताओं की इच्छा है।
Promising the gods, Agni came to Ganga and said: Goddess, hold this embryo; this is what the gods wish.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दिव्यं रूपमधारयत् ।
दृष्ट्वा तन्महिमानं स समन्तादवकीर्यत ॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā divyaṃ rūpamadhārayat |
dṛṣṭvā tanmahimānaṃ sa samantādavakīryata ||
उनके वचन सुनकर उसने दिव्य रूप धारण किया। उसकी महिमा देखकर उन्होंने उस तेज को उसके चारों ओर फैला दिया।
Hearing his words, she took on a divine form. Seeing her majesty, he spread the energy all around her.
समन्ततस्तदा देवीमभ्यषिञ्चत पावकः ।
सर्वस्रोतांसि पूर्णानि गङ्गाया रघुनन्दन ॥
samantatastadā devīmabhyaṣiñcata pāvakaḥ |
sarvasrotāṃsi pūrṇāni gaṅgāyā raghunandana ||
हे रघुनंदन, तब अग्नि ने देवी को चारों ओर से सींच दिया, और गंगा की सब धाराएँ भर गईं।
Then Agni bathed the goddess on every side, and all the streams of Ganga were filled, joy of the Raghus.
तमुवाच ततो गङ्गा सर्वदेवपुरोहितम् ।
अशक्ता धारणे देव तव तेज स्समुद्धतम् ।
दह्यमानाग्निना तेन सम्प्रव्यथितचेतना ॥
tamuvāca tato gaṅgā sarvadevapurohitam |
aśaktā dhāraṇe deva tava teja ssamuddhatam |
dahyamānāgninā tena sampravyathitacetanā ||
तब गंगा ने सब देवताओं के पुरोहित अग्नि से कहा: हे देव, मैं आपके इस प्रचंड तेज को धारण नहीं कर सकती। उस अग्नि से जलती हुई मेरा मन व्यथित है।
Then Ganga said to Agni, the priest of all the gods: God, I cannot hold your energy, which has risen so high. I am burning with that fire and my mind is in torment.
अथाब्रवीदिदं गङ्गां सर्वदेवहुताशनः ।
इह हैमवती पादे गर्भोऽयं सन्निवेश्यताम् ॥
athābravīdidaṃ gaṅgāṃ sarvadevahutāśanaḥ |
iha haimavatī pāde garbho'yaṃ sanniveśyatām ||
तब सब देवताओं के हुताशन अग्नि ने गंगा से कहा: इस गर्भ को यहाँ हिमालय की तलहटी में रख दो।
Then Agni, offering of all the gods, said to Ganga: Place this embryo here at the foot of the Himalaya.
श्रुत्वा त्वग्निवचो गङगा तं गर्भमतिभास्वरम् ।
उत्ससर्ज महातेज स्स्रोतोभ्यो हि तदानघ ॥
śrutvā tvagnivaco gaṅagā taṃ garbhamatibhāsvaram |
utsasarja mahāteja ssrotobhyo hi tadānagha ||
हे निष्पाप, अग्नि के वचन सुनकर गंगा ने अपनी धाराओं से उस अत्यंत तेजस्वी गर्भ को छोड़ दिया।
Hearing Agni's words, sinless one, Ganga released that blazing embryo of great energy from her streams.
यदस्या निर्गतं तस्मात्तप्तजाम्बूनदप्रभम् ।
काञ्चनं धरणीं प्राप्तं हिरण्यममलं शुभम् ॥
yadasyā nirgataṃ tasmāttaptajāmbūnadaprabham |
kāñcanaṃ dharaṇīṃ prāptaṃ hiraṇyamamalaṃ śubham ||
उससे जो निकला, वह तपे सोने जैसा चमकता हुआ पृथ्वी पर पहुँचकर शुद्ध और सुंदर स्वर्ण बन गया।
What came out of her, shining like molten gold, reached the earth as gold, pure and fine.
ताम्रं कार्ष्णायसं चैव तैक्ष्ण्यादेवाभ्यजायत ।
मलं तस्याभवत्तत्र त्रपु सीसकमेव च ।
तदेतद्धरणीं प्राप्य नानाधातुरवर्धत ॥
tāmraṃ kārṣṇāyasaṃ caiva taikṣṇyādevābhyajāyata |
malaṃ tasyābhavattatra trapu sīsakameva ca |
tadetaddharaṇīṃ prāpya nānādhāturavardhata ||
उसकी तीक्ष्णता से ताँबा और काला लोहा उत्पन्न हुए, और उसका मल राँगा तथा सीसा बना। इस प्रकार पृथ्वी पर पहुँचकर वह अनेक धातुओं में बढ़ गया।
From its sharpness came copper and black iron, and its dross became tin and lead. So, reaching the earth, it grew into many metals.
निक्षिप्तमात्रे गर्भे तु तेजोभिरभिरञ्जितम् ।
सर्वं पर्वतसन्नद्धं सौवर्णमभवद्वनम् ॥
nikṣiptamātre garbhe tu tejobhirabhirañjitam |
sarvaṃ parvatasannaddhaṃ sauvarṇamabhavadvanam ||
गर्भ रखते ही उसके तेज से रंगा पर्वत पर स्थित सारा वन सुनहरा हो गया।
As soon as the embryo was laid down, the whole forest on the mountain, coloured by its energy, turned golden.
जातरूपमिति ख्यातं तदा प्रभृति राघव ।
सुवर्णं पुरुषव्याघ्र हुताशनसमप्रभम् ।
तृणवृक्षलतागुल्मं सर्वं भवति काञ्चनम् ॥
jātarūpamiti khyātaṃ tadā prabhṛti rāghava |
suvarṇaṃ puruṣavyāghra hutāśanasamaprabham |
tṛṇavṛkṣalatāgulmaṃ sarvaṃ bhavati kāñcanam ||
हे राघव, पुरुषव्याघ्र, तभी से अग्नि जैसा चमकने वाला स्वर्ण जातरूप कहलाता है। वहाँ की घास, वृक्ष, लताएँ और झाड़ियाँ सब स्वर्णमय हो गईं।
From that time, Raghava, tiger among men, gold, shining like fire, has been called jatarupa. Grass, trees, creepers and shrubs there all became golden.
तं कुमारं ततो जातं सेन्द्रास्सह मरुद्गणाः ।
क्षीरसंभावनार्थाय कृत्तिकास्समयोजन् ॥
taṃ kumāraṃ tato jātaṃ sendrāssaha marudgaṇāḥ |
kṣīrasaṃbhāvanārthāya kṛttikāssamayojan ||
तब मरुद्गणों सहित इंद्र ने उस नवजात कुमार को दूध पिलाने के लिए कृत्तिकाओं को नियुक्त किया।
Then Indra with the hosts of Maruts appointed the Krittikas to nurse the newborn boy with milk.
ताः क्षीरं जातमात्रस्य कृत्वा समयमुत्तमम् ।
ददुः पुत्रोऽयमस्माकं सर्वासामिति निश्चिताः ॥
tāḥ kṣīraṃ jātamātrasya kṛtvā samayamuttamam |
daduḥ putro'yamasmākaṃ sarvāsāmiti niścitāḥ ||
उन्होंने उत्तम निश्चय करके नवजात को दूध पिलाया, यह तय करके कि यह हम सबका पुत्र होगा।
They made a fine agreement and gave milk to the newborn, resolved that he would be the son of them all.
ततस्तु देवता स्सर्वाः कार्तिकेय इति ब्रुवन् ।
पुत्रस्त्रैलोक्यविख्यातो भविष्यति न संशयः ॥
tatastu devatā ssarvāḥ kārtikeya iti bruvan |
putrastrailokyavikhyāto bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ||
तब सब देवताओं ने कहा: यह कार्तिकेय होगा, तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध पुत्र; इसमें संदेह नहीं।
Then all the gods said: He will be Kartikeya, a son famed in the three worlds; there is no doubt.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स्कन्नं गर्भपरिस्रवे ।
स्नापयन् परया लक्ष्म्या दीप्यमानं यथानलम् ॥
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā skannaṃ garbhaparisrave |
snāpayan parayā lakṣmyā dīpyamānaṃ yathānalam ||
उनके वचन सुनकर उन्होंने गर्भ के स्राव में निकले उस बालक को स्नान कराया, जो अग्नि के समान परम शोभा से दमक रहा था।
Hearing their words, they bathed the child who had slipped out in the flow of the womb, blazing with great splendour like fire.
स्कन्द इत्यब्रुवन् देवाः स्कन्नं गर्भपरिस्रवात् ।
कार्तिकेयं महाभागं काकुत्स्थ ज्वलनोपमम् ॥
skanda ityabruvan devāḥ skannaṃ garbhaparisravāt |
kārtikeyaṃ mahābhāgaṃ kākutstha jvalanopamam ||
हे काकुत्स्थ, गर्भ के स्राव से स्खलित होने के कारण देवताओं ने अग्नि के समान तेजस्वी, महाभाग कार्तिकेय को स्कंद कहा।
Because he had slipped out with the flow of the womb, the gods called Kartikeya Skanda, Kakutstha, that most fortunate one, bright as fire.
प्रादुर्भूतं ततः क्षीरं कृत्तिकानामनुत्तमम् ।
षण्णां षडाननो भूत्वा जग्राह स्तनजं पयः ॥
prādurbhūtaṃ tataḥ kṣīraṃ kṛttikānāmanuttamam |
ṣaṇṇāṃ ṣaḍānano bhūtvā jagrāha stanajaṃ payaḥ ||
तब कृत्तिकाओं का उत्तम दूध उमड़ आया, और छह मुख धारण करके उसने छहों का स्तनपान किया।
Then the fine milk of the Krittikas flowed, and becoming six faced, he drank the milk from the breasts of all six.
गृहीत्वा क्षीरमेकाह्ना सुकुमारवपुस्तदा ।
अजयत्स्वेन वीर्येण दैत्यसेनागणान् विभुः ॥
gṛhītvā kṣīramekāhnā sukumāravapustadā |
ajayatsvena vīryeṇa daityasenāgaṇān vibhuḥ ||
एक ही दिन दूध पीकर वह कोमल शरीर वाला प्रभु अपने पराक्रम से दैत्यों की सेनाओं पर विजयी हुआ।
Having drunk the milk for a single day, the lord, still tender in body, conquered the hosts of the daitya armies by his own might.
सुरसेनागणपतिं ततस्तमतुलद्युतिम् ।
अभ्यषिञ्चन् सुरगणा स्समेत्याग्निपुरोगमाः ॥
surasenāgaṇapatiṃ tatastamatuladyutim |
abhyaṣiñcan suragaṇā ssametyāgnipurogamāḥ ||
तब अग्नि आदि देवताओं ने एकत्र होकर उस अनुपम तेजस्वी का देवसेनाओं के सेनापति के रूप में अभिषेक किया।
Then the hosts of gods, led by Agni, gathered and consecrated him of matchless splendour as leader of the gods' armies.
एष ते राम गङ्गाया विस्तरोऽभिहितो मया ।
कुमारसम्भवश्चैव धन्यः पुण्यस्तथैव च ॥
eṣa te rāma gaṅgāyā vistaro'bhihito mayā |
kumārasambhavaścaiva dhanyaḥ puṇyastathaiva ca ||
हे राम, मैंने तुम्हें गंगा का और कुमार के जन्म का धन्य तथा पवित्र वृत्तांत विस्तार से सुनाया।
Rama, I have told you in full the story of Ganga and of the birth of Kumara, which is blessed and holy.
भक्तश्च यः कार्तिकेये काकुत्स्थ भुवि मानवः ।
आयुष्मान् पुत्रपौत्रैश्च स्कन्दसालोक्यतां व्रजेत् ॥
bhaktaśca yaḥ kārtikeye kākutstha bhuvi mānavaḥ |
āyuṣmān putrapautraiśca skandasālokyatāṃ vrajet ||
हे काकुत्स्थ, पृथ्वी पर जो मनुष्य कार्तिकेय का भक्त है, वह पुत्रों और पौत्रों के साथ दीर्घायु होता है और स्कंद के लोक को जाता है।
Kakutstha, any man on earth who is devoted to Kartikeya will live long, with sons and grandsons, and reach the world of Skanda.
