Why Karwa Chauth is celebrated
“Karwa” is the clay pot used in the puja and “chauth” means the fourth day. The vrat kathas told on this evening come from folk tradition. The best known is the story of Queen Veeravati, the only sister of seven brothers. Unable to bear her suffering during her first Karwa Chauth fast, her brothers lit a fire behind a tree and showed her its glow as the moon. She broke her fast early, and news came that her husband had died. Through her repentance and a year of devotion to Parvati, his life was restored.
Another tale tells of a devoted wife named Karwa, whose husband was seized by a crocodile while bathing; her faith was so strong that Yama returned his life. Women also hear the story of Savitri, whose wisdom won back Satyavan from Yama.
How Karwa Chauth is observed

- Evening puja: women gather in a circle to pass their thalis, hear the katha and worship Gauri with the karwa filled with water.
