Anant Chaturdashi 2027 falls on Tuesday, 14 September, the fourteenth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada. It has two great meanings. Devotees worship Vishnu as Ananta, “the endless one”, and tie a sacred thread with fourteen knots on the arm as a vow of protection. And it is the day of Ganesh Visarjan, when the idols installed on Ganesh Chaturthi are carried in grand processions and immersed in rivers, lakes and the sea, ending the ten-day festival.
Anant Chaturdashi 2027 date
Anant Chaturdashi 2027 is on Tuesday, 14 September 2027 (Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi), ten days after Ganesh Chaturthi on 4 September. In 2026 it fell on Friday, 25 September.
The story of the Ananta thread
The vrat katha, told in the Puranic tradition as a story Krishna narrated to Yudhishthira during the Pandavas’ exile, concerns Sushila and her husband, the sage Kaundinya. Sushila took up the Ananta vrat and tied the sacred thread, and the family prospered. Kaundinya, not knowing its meaning, mistook the thread for a charm and threw it into the fire. Misfortune followed until he realised his error and set out to find Ananta. After long wandering and repentance, Vishnu appeared to him as an old Brahmin and restored his fortune, and Kaundinya kept the vrat faithfully for fourteen years. The Pandavas, the story says, also kept it to regain their kingdom.
How Anant Chaturdashi is observed
- Ananta puja: Vishnu is worshipped as Ananta, often in the form of Shesha, with a kalash, darbha grass and fourteen kinds of offerings.
- The anant sutra: a red or yellow thread with fourteen knots is tied on the right arm by men and the left by women, and kept for fourteen days.
- Ganesh Visarjan: processions with drums, dancing and chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya” (“come back soon next year”) carry Ganesha to the water.
- Fasting: many keep a fast and eat one meal without salt.
The meaning of Anant Chaturdashi
The endless thread and the farewell to Ganesha carry one idea: the divine is never truly gone. Ananta has no end, and Ganesha is sent off with a promise to return. See all festivals on the Hindu festival calendar.
