Popular tradition also links it to Kubera receiving his treasures, to the sage Vyasa beginning to dictate the Mahabharata to Ganesha, and to the visit of the poor Sudama to his friend Krishna, who quietly gave him prosperity in return for a handful of flattened rice. These stories come from Puranic and folk tradition, and they share one idea: what is given with a pure heart on this day never runs out.

In Odisha, construction of the chariots for the Puri Rath Yatra begins on Akshaya Tritiya, and in Badrinath the temple doors traditionally open around this time after the winter.

How Akshaya Tritiya is observed

Puja: Vishnu and Lakshmi are worshipped with tulsi, yellow flowers, sandal paste and barley or rice.
Charity: water pots, fans, grain, clothes and cool foods are given, suited to the summer heat.
New beginnings: buying gold or silver, starting a business, a griha pravesh or a wedding.
Fasting: some devotees keep a fast and read the story of Parashurama.

The meaning of Akshaya Tritiya

Tradition describes the merit of this day as inexhaustible, but its real wealth is generosity: the gift of water to the thirsty, food to the hungry and friendship like Krishna’s to Sudama.
