About this aarti

Jai Saraswati Mata is the most popular aarti of Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, music, speech and the arts. It is sung on Vasant Panchami, her festival at the start of spring, in schools and colleges, before examinations and music lessons, on the last days of Navratri when books are worshipped, and at Vidyarambham. It is traditional, and its author is not known.

The aarti describes Saraswati as moon-faced and lotus-seated, riding a swan (hamsa), holding the veena in one hand and a rosary in the other, crowned with jewels and garlanded with pearls. One verse refers to a story told in the Ramayana tradition: Saraswati is said to have entered the mind of the maid Manthara, turning Kaikeyi against Rama’s coronation, so that Rama would go to the forest and destroy Ravana. The aarti ends by asking the goddess to fill the world with the light of knowledge and drive out delusion and ignorance.

How to perform the aarti

  1. Place books, pens and musical instruments before an image of Saraswati, and offer white or yellow flowers, yellow sweets and fruits.
  2. Light a ghee lamp, and sing the aarti with a bell.
  3. Many recite the Saraswati Vandana “Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala” before or after.
