Hanuman Chalisa

The Hanuman Chalisa is Tulsidas's hymn of forty chaupais and three dohas in Awadhi praising Hanuman: his strength, wisdom and devotion to Rama, his deeds in the Ramayana, and his power to protect his devotees from fear, illness and trouble. It is among the most recited prayers in Hinduism, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

1

Shri guru charan saroj raj, nij manu mukuru sudhari
Baranau Raghubar bimal jasu, jo dayaku phal chari

Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of my Guru's lotus feet, I describe the pure glory of Rama, best of the Raghus, which gives the four fruits of life: dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation.

2

Buddhiheen tanu janike, sumirau Pavan-kumar
Bal budhi bidya dehu mohi, harahu kalesh bikar

Knowing this body to be without wisdom, I remember you, son of the Wind. Give me strength, intelligence and knowledge, and take away my afflictions and impurities.

3

Jai Hanuman gyan gun sagar, jai Kapees tihun lok ujagar
Ram doot atulit bal dhama, Anjani-putra Pavansut nama
Mahabir bikram Bajrangi, kumati nivar sumati ke sangi
Kanchan baran biraj subesa, kanan kundal kunchit kesa

Victory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue; victory to the lord of the monkeys, who lights up the three worlds. You are Rama's messenger, the home of matchless strength, known as Anjani's son and the son of the Wind. Great hero, mighty as a thunderbolt, you drive away bad thoughts and are the companion of good sense. Your body is golden and finely dressed, with earrings in your ears and curly hair.

4

Haath bajra au dhvaja birajai, kandhe moonj janeu sajai
Sankar suvan Kesari nandan, tej pratap maha jag bandan
Bidyavan guni ati chatur, Ram kaj karibe ko atur
Prabhu charitra sunibe ko rasiya, Ram Lakhan Sita man basiya

In your hands shine the thunderbolt and the banner, and the sacred thread of munja grass adorns your shoulder. You are a form of Shankara and the son of Kesari; your splendour and might are worshipped by the whole world. You are learned, virtuous and very wise, always eager to do Rama's work. You delight in hearing the Lord's story; Rama, Lakshmana and Sita dwell in your heart.

5

Bheem roop dhari asur sanhare, Ramchandra ke kaj sanvare
Laye Sajivan Lakhan jiyaye, Shri Raghubir harashi ur laye
Raghupati kinhi bahut badai, tum mam priya Bharatahi sam bhai

Taking a tiny form you showed yourself to Sita; taking a fearsome form you burned Lanka. Taking a gigantic form you destroyed the demons and completed Ramachandra's tasks. You brought the Sanjeevani herb and revived Lakshmana, and Rama in joy embraced you to his heart. Rama praised you greatly: "You are as dear to me as my brother Bharata."

6

Sahas badan tumharo jas gavain, as kahi Shripati kanth lagavain
Sanakadik Brahmadi muneesa, Narad Sarad sahit Aheesa
Jam Kuber Digpal jahan te, kabi kobid kahi sake kahan te
Tum upkar Sugreevahin keenha, Ram milaye rajpad deenha

"May the thousand-mouthed serpent sing your glory," said the Lord of Lakshmi, and embraced you. Sanaka and the sages, Brahma and the gods, Narada, Saraswati and the king of serpents, Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions: how can poets and scholars describe your glory? You did a great kindness to Sugriva: you brought him to Rama and gave him back his throne.

7

Tumharo mantra Bibheeshan mana, Lankeshwar bhae sab jag jana
Jug sahasra jojan par Bhanu, leelyo tahi madhur phal janu
Prabhu mudrika meli mukh mahee, jaladhi langhi gaye achraj nahee
Durgam kaj jagat ke jete, sugam anugrah tumhare tete

Vibhishana followed your counsel and became lord of Lanka, as the whole world knows. The Sun, thousands of yojanas away, you swallowed, thinking it a sweet fruit. Holding the Lord's ring in your mouth you leapt across the ocean; no wonder at that. Every difficult task in the world becomes easy by your grace.

8

Apan tej samharo apai, teenon lok hank te kanpai
Bhoot pisach nikat nahin avai, Mahabir jab naam sunavai

You are the guardian at Rama's door; no one enters without your leave. All happiness is found in your refuge; with you as protector, there is nothing to fear. Only you can contain your own power; the three worlds tremble at your roar. Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near when the name of the Great Hero is spoken.

9

Nasai rog harai sab peera, japat nirantar Hanumat beera
Sankat te Hanuman chhudavai, man kram bachan dhyan jo lavai
Sab par Ram tapasvee raja, tin ke kaj sakal tum saja
Aur manorath jo koi lavai, soi amit jeevan phal pavai

Disease is destroyed and all pain removed by constantly chanting the name of brave Hanuman. Hanuman frees from trouble those who fix their mind, deeds and words on him. Rama, the ascetic king, is above all, and you accomplished all his tasks. Whoever comes to you with any other wish receives the fruit of it without limit in this life.

10

Charon jug partap tumhara, hai parsiddh jagat ujiyara
Sadhu sant ke tum rakhvare, asur nikandan Ram dulare
Ashta siddhi nau nidhi ke data, as bar deen Janaki mata
Ram rasayan tumhare pasa, sada raho Raghupati ke dasa

Your glory fills all four ages, and your fame lights the whole world. You are the protector of the good and the saints, the destroyer of demons, the darling of Rama. You can give the eight siddhis and the nine treasures: such was the boon Mother Janaki gave you. You hold the elixir of Rama's name; may you always remain the servant of Raghupati.

11

Tumhare bhajan Ram ko pavai, janam janam ke dukh bisravai
Ant kaal Raghubar pur jaee, jahan janma Hari-bhakt kahaee
Aur devta chitt na dharaee, Hanumat sei sarb sukh karaee
Sankat katai mitai sab peera, jo sumirai Hanumat balbeera

By singing of you one reaches Rama and forgets the sorrows of birth after birth. At the end one goes to Rama's abode and, if born again, is known as a devotee of Hari. Even without keeping any other god in mind, serving Hanuman gives every happiness. Troubles end and all pain fades for whoever remembers the mighty hero Hanuman.

12

Jai jai jai Hanuman Gosain, kripa karahu gurudev ki naeen
Jo sat bar path kar koee, chhootahi bandi maha sukh hoee
Jo yah padhai Hanuman Chalisa, hoy siddhi sakhee Gaureesa
Tulsidas sada Hari chera, keejai nath hriday manh dera

Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman! Be gracious to me as my Guru is. Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and gains great happiness. Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains success; Shiva, lord of Gauri, is witness. Tulsidas, always the servant of Hari, prays: Lord, make your home in my heart.

13

Pavantanay sankat haran, mangal moorati roop
Ram Lakhan Sita sahit, hriday basahu sur bhoop

Son of the Wind, remover of troubles, whose form is auspiciousness itself: with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, dwell in my heart, O king of the gods.

About the Hanuman Chalisa

The Hanuman Chalisa (“forty verses on Hanuman”) is a hymn of praise to Hanuman written in Awadhi by the poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas (c. 1532–1623), author of the Ramcharitmanas. It has forty chaupais (four-quarter verses), framed by two dohas (couplets) at the beginning and one at the end. It is probably the most frequently recited prayer in North India: many people know it by heart and recite it daily, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Hanuman’s days.

The Chalisa tells Hanuman’s story in brief, following the Ramayana: his birth as son of Anjana and the wind god, his leap at the Sun, his service to Rama, his meeting with Sita in Lanka in the form of a tiny monkey and the burning of the city in his terrible form, bringing the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshmana, and Rama’s embrace. Then it turns to his power to protect: from ghosts and evil spirits, from illness and pain, from every kind of trouble, and it promises his devotee the love of Rama and liberation at the end of life.

How and when to recite it

  • Bathe and sit facing an image of Hanuman or of Rama’s court, and light a lamp of ghee or sesame oil.
  • Many begin with a short invocation such as the Ramayana verse “Manojavam marutatulyavegam…“.
  • Recite the opening dohas, the forty chaupais and the closing doha. Some repeat it 7, 11 or 108 times; the 38th verse speaks of reciting it a hundred times.
  • Offer red flowers, sindoor mixed with jasmine oil, and boondi laddoos or jaggery and gram, then sing the Hanuman aarti.
  • Tuesdays, Saturdays, Hanuman Jayanti and times of fear or difficulty are especially traditional, but it can be recited anytime.
