About this aarti

Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki is the best-known aarti of Hanuman, sung after the Hanuman Chalisa or the Sundar Kand in temples and homes, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays and on Hanuman Jayanti. It is attributed by many to Tulsidas, though this is uncertain; it is in Awadhi, in the same simple chaupai style as the Chalisa.

The aarti tells Hanuman’s story in short couplets: the mountains tremble at his strength, and disease and misfortune dare not come near. Sent by Rama with a betel leaf as a token, he crossed the ocean to Lanka with its walls and moat, burned the city and brought back news of Sita. He brought the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshmana, went down to the underworld to tear off the arms of Ahiravana, and with his left arm destroys demons while with his right he saves the saints. Gods, humans and sages wave the lamp before him, and his mother Anjana herself performs his aarti with a golden plate.

How to perform the aarti

  1. Offer Hanuman sindoor mixed with jasmine oil, red flowers, a sacred thread, and boondi laddoos, or jaggery and roasted gram.
  2. Light a lamp of ghee or sesame oil, ideally with a four-sided wick.
  3. Sing the aarti with bell and cymbals, waving the lamp clockwise.
  4. Close with “Bolo Bajrangbali ki jai” or “Pavanputra Hanuman ki jai“.
