Meaning
Salutations again and again to Durga, maker of happiness; to Amba, remover of sorrow. Your formless light fills all three worlds; the moon shines on your brow, your face is vast, your eyes red and brows fierce, yet the Mother's form delights, and those who behold it find great joy. You dissolved the world's power into yourself and gave grain and wealth for its sustenance; you became Annapurna who feeds the world, and the primordial beautiful maiden. You are Gauri, beloved of Shiva; Brahma and Vishnu ever meditate on you. You took the form of Saraswati to give wisdom; you tore open the pillar as Narasimha to save Prahlada; you dwell as Lakshmi beside Narayana. You are worshipped at Hinglaj; you are the Mahavidyas — Matangi, Dhumavati, Bhuvaneshwari, Bagala, Tara. Riding your lion, with the hero Langura before you, skull-bowl and sword in hand, trident and weapons gleaming so that even Death flees at the sight, you killed Shumbha and Nishumbha and Raktabija, and as the terrible Kali you destroyed the arrogant buffalo-demon Mahishasura and his army that had burdened the earth. Whenever hardship fell on the good, Mother, you came to their aid. The hymn then recalls how even Shankaracharya lost his power when he forgot the Goddess, and regained it on taking refuge in her. The devotee pleads: trouble surrounds me, Mother — who but you can remove my sorrow? Destroy my enemies, O queen; show me grace, grant prosperity and fulfilment. Whoever sings the Durga Chalisa daily enjoys every happiness and attains the highest state; Devidas takes refuge in you — show your grace, Jagadamba Bhavani.
About this chalisa
The Durga Chalisa is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to Durga, the Mother Goddess, “maker of happiness and remover of sorrow” (sukh karani, dukh harani). Its verses sweep across her many forms — Annapurna who feeds the world, Lakshmi and Saraswati, the fierce Kali, the Mahavidyas (Matangi, Dhumavati, Bhuvaneshwari, Bagala, Tara) — and across her great victories: the slaying of Shumbha and Nishumbha, of Raktabija, and above all of the buffalo-demon Mahishasura, whose arrogance had burdened the earth.
The hymn even tells how Adi Shankaracharya once forgot the Goddess in his austerities and lost his power, until he took refuge in her again. It ends with the devotee’s own cry: “trouble surrounds me, Mother — who but you can take away my sorrow?”
How to recite it
Light a lamp before an image of Durga, offer red flowers, kumkum and sweets.
Recite the forty verses, ideally after the Durga Saptashati or a simple puja, in the morning or evening.
Especially powerful through the nine nights of Navratri and on Fridays and Ashtami.
Why devotees recite it
Durga is Shakti — the power without which, the hymn says, even the gods cannot act. The Durga Chalisa is turned to for protection, for the destruction of enemies and obstacles, for courage, and for the Mother’s unfailing help “whenever trouble has fallen on the good”.
