तस्य त्वेवं प्रभावस्य धर्मज्ञस्य महात्मनः ।
सुतार्थं तप्यमानस्य नासीद्वंशकरस्सुतः ॥
tasya tvevaṃ prabhāvasya dharmajñasya mahātmanaḥ |
sutārthaṃ tapyamānasya nāsīdvaṃśakarassutaḥ ||
हिंदी अर्थइतने प्रभावशाली, धर्मज्ञ और महात्मा होने पर भी, और पुत्र के लिए तप करने पर भी, राजा के वंश को आगे बढ़ाने वाला कोई पुत्र नहीं था।
English meaningThough he was so mighty, knew dharma and was great souled, and though he practised austerities for the sake of a son, the king had no son to carry on his line.
चिन्तयानस्य तस्यैवं बुद्धिरासीन्महात्मनः ।
सुतार्थं हयमेधेन किमर्थं न यजाम्यहम् ॥
cintayānasya tasyaivaṃ buddhirāsīnmahātmanaḥ |
sutārthaṃ hayamedhena kimarthaṃ na yajāmyaham ||

English meaningAs the great souled king pondered this, a thought came to him: why should I not perform the horse sacrifice for the sake of a son?
स निश्चितां मतिं कृत्वा यष्टव्यमिति बुद्धिमान् ।
मन्त्रिभिस्सह धर्मात्मा सर्वैरेव कृतात्मभिः ।
ततोऽब्रवीदिदं राजा सुमन्त्रं मन्त्रिसत्तमम् ।
शीघ्रमानय मे सर्वान्गुरूंस्तान् सपुरोहितान् ॥
sa niścitāṃ matiṃ kṛtvā yaṣṭavyamiti buddhimān |
mantribhissaha dharmātmā sarvaireva kṛtātmabhiḥ |

हिंदी अर्थबुद्धिमान और धर्मात्मा राजा ने अपने सभी संयमी मंत्रियों के साथ निश्चय किया कि यज्ञ करना चाहिए। फिर उन्होंने मंत्रियों में श्रेष्ठ सुमंत्र से कहा: मेरे सब गुरुओं को पुरोहित सहित शीघ्र यहाँ ले आओ।
English meaningThe wise and righteous king made up his mind that the sacrifice must be performed, together with all his ministers of disciplined mind. Then he said to Sumantra, the best of counsellors: Bring all my teachers here quickly, together with the family priest.
ततस्सुमन्त्रस्त्वरितं गत्वा त्वरितविक्रमः ।
समानयत्स तान् सर्वान् समस्तान्वेदपारगान् ।
सुयज्ञं वामदेवं च जाबालिमथ काश्यपम् ।
परोहितं वसिष्ठं च ये चान्ये व्दिजसत्तमाः ॥
tatassumantrastvaritaṃ gatvā tvaritavikramaḥ |
samānayatsa tān sarvān samastānvedapāragān |

हिंदी अर्थशीघ्रता से काम करने वाले सुमंत्र तुरंत गए और वेदों में पारंगत उन सबको ले आए: सुयज्ञ, वामदेव, जाबालि और काश्यप, कुलपुरोहित वसिष्ठ, और अन्य श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण।
English meaningSumantra, swift in action, went at once and brought all those masters of the Vedas: Suyajna, Vamadeva, Jabali and Kashyapa, the family priest Vasishtha, and the other best of brahmins.
तान्पूजयित्वा धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथस्तदा ।
इदं धर्मार्थसहितं श्लक्ष्णंवचनमब्रवीत् ॥

English meaningAfter honouring them, the righteous King Dasharatha spoke these gentle words, full of dharma and good sense.
मम लालप्यमानस्य पुत्रार्थन्नास्ति वै सुखम् ।
तदर्थं हयमेधेन यक्ष्यामीति मतिर्मम ॥
mama lālapyamānasya putrārthannāsti vai sukham |
tadarthaṃ hayamedhena yakṣyāmīti matirmama ||
हिंदी अर्थपुत्र के लिए विलाप करते हुए मुझे कोई सुख नहीं है। इसलिए मैंने उसी के लिए अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का निश्चय किया है।
English meaningI lament for want of a son and have no happiness. So I have resolved to perform the horse sacrifice for that purpose.
तदहं यष्टुमिच्छामि शास्त्रदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
कथं प्राप्स्याम्यहं कामं बुद्धिरत्रविचार्यताम् ॥
tadahaṃ yaṣṭumicchāmi śāstradṛṣṭena karmaṇā |
kathaṃ prāpsyāmyahaṃ kāmaṃ buddhiratravicāryatām ||

tatassādhviti tadvākyaṃ brāhmaṇāḥ pratyapūjayan |
vasiṣṭhapramukhāssarve pārthivasya mukhāccyutam ||
हिंदी अर्थवसिष्ठ आदि सभी ब्राह्मणों ने राजा के मुख से निकले उन वचनों की सराहना की और कहा: बहुत अच्छा।
English meaningAll the brahmins, led by Vasishtha, praised the words that came from the king's mouth, saying: Well said.
ऊचुश्च परमप्रीतास्सर्वे दशरथं वचः ।
सम्भारास्सम्भ्रियन्तां ते तुरगश्च विमुच्यताम् ॥
ūcuśca paramaprītāssarve daśarathaṃ vacaḥ |
sambhārāssambhriyantāṃ te turagaśca vimucyatām ||
हिंदी अर्थअत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर उन सबने दशरथ से कहा: सामग्री जुटाई जाए और घोड़ा छोड़ा जाए।

सर्वथा प्राप्स्यसे पुत्रानभिप्रेतांश्च पार्थिव ।
यस्य ते धार्मिकी बुद्धिरियं पुत्रार्थमागता ॥
sarvathā prāpsyase putrānabhipretāṃśca pārthiva |
yasya te dhārmikī buddhiriyaṃ putrārthamāgatā ||

English meaningKing, you will surely gain the sons you desire, since this righteous resolve has come to you for the sake of a son.
ततः प्रीतोऽभवद्राजा श्रुत्वा तद्विजभाषितम् ।
अमात्यांश्चाब्रवीद्राजा हर्षपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥

समर्थाधिष्ठितश्चाश्वस्सोपाध्यायो विमुच्यताम् ॥

सरय्वाश्चोत्तरे तीरे यज्ञभूमिर्विधीयताम् ।
शान्तयश्चाभिवर्धन्तां यथाकल्पं यथाविधि ॥

English meaningAny king can perform this sacrifice, provided no grave error is made in this greatest of rites.
छिद्रं हि मृगयन्तेऽत्र विद्वांसो ब्रह्मराक्षसाः ।
निहतस्य च यज्ञस्य सद्यः कर्ता विनश्यति ॥
chidraṃ hi mṛgayante'tra vidvāṃso brahmarākṣasāḥ |
nihatasya ca yajñasya sadyaḥ kartā vinaśyati ||
हिंदी अर्थक्योंकि विद्वान ब्रह्मराक्षस इसमें छिद्र खोजते रहते हैं, और यज्ञ नष्ट होने पर यज्ञकर्ता तुरंत नष्ट हो जाता है।
English meaningFor learned brahmarakshasas look for a flaw here, and when a sacrifice is ruined the one who performs it perishes at once.
तद्यथा विधिपूर्वं मे क्रतुरेष समाप्यते ।
तथा विधानं क्रियतां समर्थाः करणेष्विह ॥
tadyathā vidhipūrvaṃ me kratureṣa samāpyate |
tathā vidhānaṃ kriyatāṃ samarthāḥ karaṇeṣviha ||
हिंदी अर्थइसलिए ऐसी व्यवस्था करो कि मेरा यह यज्ञ विधिपूर्वक पूर्ण हो। तुम ऐसे कार्य करने में समर्थ हो।
English meaningSo arrange everything so that my sacrifice is completed exactly according to the rules. You are able in carrying out such work.
तथेति चाब्रुवन्सर्वे मन्त्रिणःप्रत्यपूजयन् ।
पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य तद्वाक्यं यथाज्ञप्तं निशम्य ते ॥
tatheti cābruvansarve mantriṇaḥpratyapūjayan |
pārthivendrasya tadvākyaṃ yathājñaptaṃ niśamya te ||
हिंदी अर्थराजाधिराज के वचन सुनकर सब मंत्रियों ने उनकी आज्ञा का सम्मान किया और कहा: ऐसा ही होगा।
English meaningHearing the king's words, all the ministers honoured his command and said: So be it.
तथा द्विजास्ते धर्मज्ञा वर्धयन्तो नृपोत्तमम् ।
अनुज्ञातास्ततस्सर्वे पुनर्जग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥
tathā dvijāste dharmajñā vardhayanto nṛpottamam |
anujñātāstatassarve punarjagmuryathāgatam ||
हिंदी अर्थधर्म को जानने वाले ब्राह्मणों ने उस श्रेष्ठ राजा को आशीर्वाद दिया और उनकी अनुमति लेकर जैसे आए थे वैसे लौट गए।
English meaningThe brahmins who knew dharma blessed the best of kings and, with his leave, returned as they had come.
विसर्जयित्वा तान्विप्रान्सचिवानिदमब्रवीत् ।
ऋत्विग्भिरुपदिष्टोऽयं यथावत्क्रतुराप्यताम् ॥
visarjayitvā tānviprānsacivānidamabravīt |
ṛtvigbhirupadiṣṭo'yaṃ yathāvatkraturāpyatām ||
हिंदी अर्थब्राह्मणों को विदा करके राजा ने मंत्रियों से कहा: ऋत्विजों के बताए अनुसार यह यज्ञ भलीभाँति संपन्न किया जाए।
English meaningHaving sent the brahmins away, the king said to his ministers: Let this sacrifice be carried out properly, as the priests have directed.
इत्युक्त्वा नृपशार्दूलस्सचिवान्समुपस्थितान् ।
विसर्जयित्वा स्वं वेश्म प्रविवेश महाद्युतिः ॥
ityuktvā nṛpaśārdūlassacivānsamupasthitān |
visarjayitvā svaṃ veśma praviveśa mahādyutiḥ ||

English meaningHaving said this to the ministers before him and dismissed them, the radiant tiger among kings entered his own palace.
ततस्स गत्वा ताःपत्नीर्नरेन्द्रो हृदयप्रियाः ।
उवाच दीक्षां विशत यक्ष्येऽहं सुतकारणात् ॥
tatassa gatvā tāḥpatnīrnarendro hṛdayapriyāḥ |

तासां तेनातिकान्तेन वचनेन सुवर्चसाम् ।
मुखपद्मान्यशोभन्त पद्मानीव हिमात्यये ॥
