बालकांड, सर्ग 44: पूर्वजों की मुक्ति
Ganga's water touches the ashes of Sagara's sons and they rise to heaven. Brahma names the river Bhagirathi, and Vishwamitra closes the tale with the merit of hearing it.
गंगाजल के स्पर्श से सगर के पुत्रों की भस्म स्वर्ग को जाती है। ब्रह्मा नदी का नाम भागीरथी रखते हैं, और विश्वामित्र इस कथा के श्रवण का फल बताकर इसे समाप्त करते हैं।
स गत्वा सागरं राजा गङ्गयाऽनुगतस्तदा ।
प्रविवेश तलं भूमेर्यत्र ते भस्मसात्कृताः ॥
sa gatvā sāgaraṃ rājā gaṅgayā'nugatastadā |
praviveśa talaṃ bhūmeryatra te bhasmasātkṛtāḥ ||
गंगा के साथ समुद्र तक जाकर राजा पृथ्वी के उस तल में पहुँचे जहाँ वे भस्म हुए थे।
Going to the ocean with Ganga following him, the king entered the depths of the earth where they had been burnt to ash.
भस्मन्यथाऽप्लुते राम गङ्गायास्सलिलेन वै ।
सर्वलोकप्रभुर्ब्रह्मा राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ॥
bhasmanyathā'plute rāma gaṅgāyāssalilena vai |
sarvalokaprabhurbrahmā rājānamidamabravīt ||
हे राम, जब राख गंगाजल से भीग गई, तब सब लोकों के स्वामी ब्रह्मा ने राजा से कहा:
When the ashes were soaked with the water of Ganga, Rama, Brahma, lord of all the worlds, said to the king:
तारिता नरशार्दूल दिवं याताश्च देववत् ।
षष्ठिः पुत्रसहस्राणि सगरस्य महात्मनः ॥
tāritā naraśārdūla divaṃ yātāśca devavat |
ṣaṣṭhiḥ putrasahasrāṇi sagarasya mahātmanaḥ ||
हे नरशार्दूल, महात्मा सगर के साठ हजार पुत्रों का उद्धार हो गया और वे देवताओं की तरह स्वर्ग चले गए।
Tiger among men, the sixty thousand sons of the great souled Sagara are saved and have gone to heaven like gods.
सागरस्य जलं लोके यावत्स्थास्यति पार्थिव ।
सगरस्यात्मजास्तावत्स्वर्गे स्थास्यन्ति देववत् ॥
sāgarasya jalaṃ loke yāvatsthāsyati pārthiva |
sagarasyātmajāstāvatsvarge sthāsyanti devavat ||
हे राजन, जब तक संसार में समुद्र का जल रहेगा, तब तक सगर के पुत्र देवताओं की तरह स्वर्ग में रहेंगे।
King, as long as the water of the ocean remains in the world, so long will the sons of Sagara dwell in heaven like gods.
इयं च दुहिता ज्येष्ठा तव गङ्गा भविष्यति ।
त्वत्कृतेन च नाम्नाऽथ लोके स्थास्यति विश्रुता ॥
iyaṃ ca duhitā jyeṣṭhā tava gaṅgā bhaviṣyati |
tvatkṛtena ca nāmnā'tha loke sthāsyati viśrutā ||
और गंगा तुम्हारी बड़ी पुत्री होगी, और तुम्हारे दिए नाम से संसार में प्रसिद्ध होगी।
And Ganga will be your elder daughter, and she will be famed in the world by a name you have given her.
गङ्गा त्रिपथगा राजन् दिव्या भागीरथीति च ।
त्रीन् पथो भावयन्तीति ततस्त्रिपथगा स्मृता ॥
gaṅgā tripathagā rājan divyā bhāgīrathīti ca |
trīn patho bhāvayantīti tatastripathagā smṛtā ||
हे राजन, वह गंगा, त्रिपथगा और दिव्य भागीरथी कहलाएगी। तीन मार्गों को पवित्र करने के कारण वह त्रिपथगा कहलाती है।
King, she will be called Ganga, Tripathaga and the divine Bhagirathi. Because she purifies three paths, she is remembered as Tripathaga.
पितामहानां सर्वेषां त्वमत्र मनुजाधिप ।
कुरुष्व सलिलं राजन् प्रतिज्ञामपवर्जय ॥
pitāmahānāṃ sarveṣāṃ tvamatra manujādhipa |
kuruṣva salilaṃ rājan pratijñāmapavarjaya ||
हे नरेश, यहाँ अपने सब पितामहों के लिए जलांजलि दो, और इस प्रकार अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी करो।
Lord of men, offer water here for all your grandfathers, king, and so fulfil your vow.
पूर्वकेण हि ते राजंस्तेनातियशसा तदा ।
धर्मिणां प्रवरेणापि नैष प्राप्तो मनोरथः ॥
pūrvakeṇa hi te rājaṃstenātiyaśasā tadā |
dharmiṇāṃ pravareṇāpi naiṣa prāpto manorathaḥ ||
हे राजन, तुम्हारे अत्यंत यशस्वी पूर्वज, जो धर्मात्माओं में श्रेष्ठ थे, यह मनोरथ नहीं पा सके।
For your famous ancestor, king, though he was the best of the righteous, did not win this wish.
तथैवांशुमता तात लोकेऽप्रतिमतेजसा ।
गङ्गां प्रार्थयतानेतुं प्रतिज्ञा नापवर्जिता ॥
tathaivāṃśumatā tāta loke'pratimatejasā |
gaṅgāṃ prārthayatānetuṃ pratijñā nāpavarjitā ||
हे तात, संसार में अनुपम तेजस्वी अंशुमान भी गंगा को लाने की इच्छा करके अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी नहीं कर सके।
Nor did Amshuman, my dear, of matchless splendour in the world, fulfil the vow though he sought to bring Ganga.
राजर्षिणा गुणवता महर्षिसमतेजसा ।
मत्तुल्यतपसा चैव क्षत्रधर्मस्थितेन च ।
दिलीपेन महाभाग तव पित्राऽति तेजसा ।
पुनर्न शङ्किताऽनेतुं गङ्गां प्रार्थयताऽनघ ॥
rājarṣiṇā guṇavatā maharṣisamatejasā |
mattulyatapasā caiva kṣatradharmasthitena ca |
dilīpena mahābhāga tava pitrā'ti tejasā |
punarna śaṅkitā'netuṃ gaṅgāṃ prārthayatā'nagha ||
हे महाभाग, निष्पाप, तुम्हारे अत्यंत तेजस्वी पिता दिलीप भी, जो गुणवान राजर्षि, महर्षियों के समान तेजस्वी, तप में मेरे समान और क्षत्रिय धर्म में दृढ़ थे, गंगा को लाने की इच्छा करके भी सफल नहीं हुए।
Nor, fortunate and sinless one, could your most radiant father Dilipa, a virtuous royal sage, bright as the great sages, my equal in penance and firm in the duty of a kshatriya, succeed though he sought to bring Ganga.
सा त्वया समनुक्रान्ता प्रतिज्ञा पुरुषर्षभ ।
प्राप्तोऽसि परमं लोके यशः परमसम्मतम् ॥
sā tvayā samanukrāntā pratijñā puruṣarṣabha |
prāpto'si paramaṃ loke yaśaḥ paramasammatam ||
हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ, तुमने वह प्रतिज्ञा पूरी कर दी, और संसार में परम सम्मानित यश प्राप्त किया।
You have fulfilled that vow, bull among men, and have won the highest and most esteemed fame in the world.
यच्च गङ्गावतरणं त्वया कृतमरिन्दम ।
अनेन च भवान् प्राप्तो धर्मस्यायतनं महत् ॥
yacca gaṅgāvataraṇaṃ tvayā kṛtamarindama |
anena ca bhavān prāpto dharmasyāyatanaṃ mahat ||
हे शत्रुदमन, गंगा का अवतरण कराकर तुमने धर्म का महान धाम प्राप्त किया है।
Tamer of foes, by bringing Ganga down you have reached the great abode of dharma.
प्लावयस्व त्वमात्मानं नरोत्तम सदोचिते ।
सलिले पुरुषव्याघ्र शुचिः पुण्यफलो भव ॥
plāvayasva tvamātmānaṃ narottama sadocite |
salile puruṣavyāghra śuciḥ puṇyaphalo bhava ||
हे नरोत्तम, सदा उचित इस जल में स्नान करो। हे पुरुषव्याघ्र, पवित्र होकर पुण्य का फल पाओ।
Best of men, bathe in this water that is always fitting. Tiger among men, be pure and gain the fruit of merit.
पितामहानां सर्वेषां कुरुष्व सलिलक्रियाम् ।
स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु गमिष्यामि स्वं लोकं गम्यतां नृप ॥
pitāmahānāṃ sarveṣāṃ kuruṣva salilakriyām |
svasti te'stu gamiṣyāmi svaṃ lokaṃ gamyatāṃ nṛpa ||
अपने सब पितामहों की जलक्रिया करो। तुम्हारा कल्याण हो; मैं अपने लोक को जाता हूँ। हे राजन, जाओ।
Perform the water rites for all your grandfathers. Blessings on you; I shall go to my world. Go, king.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा देवेशः सर्वलोकपितामहः ।
यथाऽऽगतं तथाऽगच्छत् देवलोकं महायशाः ॥
ityevamuktvā deveśaḥ sarvalokapitāmahaḥ |
yathā''gataṃ tathā'gacchat devalokaṃ mahāyaśāḥ ||
यह कहकर सब लोकों के पितामह, महायशस्वी देवेश जैसे आए थे वैसे देवलोक लौट गए।
Saying this, the renowned lord of the gods, Grandsire of all the worlds, went back to the world of the gods as he had come.
भगीरथोऽपि राजर्षिः कृत्वा सलिलमुत्तमम् ।
यथाक्रमं यथान्यायं सागराणां महायशाः ।
कृतोदकश्शुची राजा स्वपुरं प्रविवेश ह ।
समृद्धार्थो रघुश्रेष्ठ स्वराज्यं प्रशशास ह ॥
bhagīratho'pi rājarṣiḥ kṛtvā salilamuttamam |
yathākramaṃ yathānyāyaṃ sāgarāṇāṃ mahāyaśāḥ |
kṛtodakaśśucī rājā svapuraṃ praviveśa ha |
samṛddhārtho raghuśreṣṭha svarājyaṃ praśaśāsa ha ||
महायशस्वी राजर्षि भगीरथ ने क्रम और विधि से सगरपुत्रों की उत्तम जलक्रिया की। जलांजलि देकर पवित्र हुए राजा अपने नगर लौटे, और हे रघुश्रेष्ठ, समृद्ध होकर अपना राज्य करने लगे।
The renowned royal sage Bhagiratha offered the fine water rites for the sons of Sagara in due order. Having offered the water and being purified, the king entered his city, and with his wealth abundant, best of the Raghus, ruled his kingdom.
प्रमुमोद ह लोकस्तं नृपमासाद्य राघव ।
नष्टशोकस्समृद्धार्थो बभूव विगतज्वरः ॥
pramumoda ha lokastaṃ nṛpamāsādya rāghava |
naṣṭaśokassamṛddhārtho babhūva vigatajvaraḥ ||
हे राघव, उस राजा को पाकर प्रजा आनंदित हुई; उसका शोक मिट गया, वह समृद्ध और निश्चिंत हो गई।
The people rejoiced to have that king, Raghava; their grief gone, they prospered and were free of care.
एष ते राम गङ्गाया विस्तरोऽभिहितो मया ।
स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भद्रं ते संध्याकालोऽतिवर्तते ॥
eṣa te rāma gaṅgāyā vistaro'bhihito mayā |
svasti prāpnuhi bhadraṃ te saṃdhyākālo'tivartate ||
हे राम, मैंने तुम्हें गंगा की कथा विस्तार से सुनाई। तुम्हारा कल्याण हो; संध्या का समय बीत रहा है।
Rama, I have told you the story of Ganga in full. Be well, blessings on you; the time for evening prayer is passing.
धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं पुत्र्यं स्वर्ग्यमतीव च ।
यश्श्रावयति विप्रेषु क्षत्रियेष्वितरेषु च ।
प्रीयन्ते पितरस्तस्य प्रीयन्ते दैवतानि च ॥
dhanyaṃ yaśasyamāyuṣyaṃ putryaṃ svargyamatīva ca |
yaśśrāvayati vipreṣu kṣatriyeṣvitareṣu ca |
prīyante pitarastasya prīyante daivatāni ca ||
यह कथा धन, यश, आयु, पुत्र और विशेषकर स्वर्ग देने वाली है। जो इसे ब्राह्मणों, क्षत्रियों और अन्य लोगों को सुनाता है, उससे पितर और देवता प्रसन्न होते हैं।
This story brings wealth, fame, long life, sons and heaven above all. Whoever tells it to brahmins, kshatriyas and others pleases his ancestors and the gods.
इदमाख्यानमव्यग्रो गङ्गावतरणं शुभम् ।
यश्शृणोति च काकुत्स्थ सर्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात् ।
सर्वे पापाः प्रणश्यन्ति आयुः कीर्तिश्च वर्धते ॥
idamākhyānamavyagro gaṅgāvataraṇaṃ śubham |
yaśśṛṇoti ca kākutstha sarvān kāmānavāpnuyāt |
sarve pāpāḥ praṇaśyanti āyuḥ kīrtiśca vardhate ||
हे काकुत्स्थ, जो शांत मन से गंगावतरण की यह शुभ कथा सुनता है, उसकी सब कामनाएँ पूरी होती हैं; उसके सब पाप नष्ट होते हैं, और आयु तथा कीर्ति बढ़ती है।
Kakutstha, whoever listens with a calm mind to this auspicious story of the descent of Ganga gains all he desires; all his sins are destroyed, and his life and fame increase.
