बालकांड, सर्ग 12: अश्वमेध की तैयारी
In spring Dasharatha asks Rishyasringa to lead the sacrifice. The priests tell him to gather the materials and release the sacrificial horse, and the king sets his ministers to the work.
वसंत ऋतु में दशरथ ऋष्यशृंग से यज्ञ कराने की प्रार्थना करते हैं। पुरोहित सामग्री जुटाने और यज्ञ का अश्व छोड़ने को कहते हैं, और राजा मंत्रियों को काम में लगाते हैं।
ततः काले बहुतिथे कस्मिंश्चित्सुमनोहरे ।
वसन्ते समनुप्राप्ते राज्ञो यष्टुं मनोऽभवत् ॥
tataḥ kāle bahutithe kasmiṃścitsumanohare |
vasante samanuprāpte rājño yaṣṭuṃ mano'bhavat ||
बहुत समय बीतने के बाद, जब मनोहर वसंत ऋतु आई, तो राजा का मन यज्ञ करने का हुआ।
After a long time had passed, when the lovely season of spring arrived, the king set his mind on the sacrifice.
ततः प्रसाद्य शिरसा तं विप्रं देववर्णिनम् ।
यज्ञाय वरयामास सन्तानार्थं कुलस्य वै ॥
tataḥ prasādya śirasā taṃ vipraṃ devavarṇinam |
yajñāya varayāmāsa santānārthaṃ kulasya vai ||
देवताओं जैसे तेजस्वी उस ब्राह्मण को सिर झुकाकर प्रसन्न करते हुए उन्होंने कुल की संतान के लिए उन्हें यज्ञ के लिए वरण किया।
Bowing his head to win the favour of that brahmin, radiant as a god, he chose him for the sacrifice, for the continuation of his line.
तथेति च स राजानमुवाच च सुसत्कृतः ।
सम्भारा सम्भ्रियन्तां ते तुरगश्च विमुच्यताम् ॥
tatheti ca sa rājānamuvāca ca susatkṛtaḥ |
sambhārā sambhriyantāṃ te turagaśca vimucyatām ||
सम्मानित ऋषि ने राजा से कहा: ऐसा ही हो। सामग्री जुटाई जाए और घोड़ा छोड़ा जाए।
Well honoured, the sage said to the king: So be it. Let the materials be gathered and the horse be released.
ततो राजाऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं सुमन्त्रं मन्त्रिसत्तमम् ।
सुमन्त्रावाहय क्षिप्रं ऋत्विजो ब्रह्मवादिनः ।
सुयज्ञं वामदेवं च जाबालिमथ काश्यपम् ।
पुरोहितं वसिष्ठं च ये चान्ये द्विजसत्तमाः ॥
tato rājā'bravīdvākyaṃ sumantraṃ mantrisattamam |
sumantrāvāhaya kṣipraṃ ṛtvijo brahmavādinaḥ |
suyajñaṃ vāmadevaṃ ca jābālimatha kāśyapam |
purohitaṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ ca ye cānye dvijasattamāḥ ||
फिर राजा ने मंत्रियों में श्रेष्ठ सुमंत्र से कहा: सुमंत्र, वेदों के व्याख्याता ऋत्विजों को शीघ्र बुलाओ: सुयज्ञ, वामदेव, जाबालि और काश्यप, कुलपुरोहित वसिष्ठ और अन्य श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों को।
Then the king said to Sumantra, the best of ministers: Sumantra, quickly summon the priests who expound the Vedas: Suyajna, Vamadeva, Jabali and Kashyapa, the family priest Vasishtha and the other best of brahmins.
ततस्सुमन्त्रस्त्वरितं गत्वा त्वरितविक्रमः ।
समानयत्स तान्विप्रान् समस्तान्वेदपारगान् ॥
tatassumantrastvaritaṃ gatvā tvaritavikramaḥ |
samānayatsa tānviprān samastānvedapāragān ||
शीघ्रता से काम करने वाले सुमंत्र तुरंत गए और वेदों में पारंगत उन सब ब्राह्मणों को ले आए।
Sumantra, swift in action, went at once and brought all those brahmins, masters of the Vedas.
तान्पूजयित्वा धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथस्तदा ।
धर्मार्थसहितं युक्तं श्लक्ष्णं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥
tānpūjayitvā dharmātmā rājā daśarathastadā |
dharmārthasahitaṃ yuktaṃ ślakṣṇaṃ vacanamabravīt ||
उनका पूजन करके धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथ ने धर्म और अर्थ से युक्त, उचित और मधुर वचन कहे।
After honouring them, the righteous King Dasharatha spoke gentle and fitting words, full of dharma and good sense.
मम लालप्यमानस्य पुत्रार्थं नास्ति वै सुखम् ।
तदर्थं हयमेधेन यक्ष्यामीति मतिर्मम ॥
mama lālapyamānasya putrārthaṃ nāsti vai sukham |
tadarthaṃ hayamedhena yakṣyāmīti matirmama ||
पुत्र के लिए विलाप करते हुए मुझे कोई सुख नहीं है। इसलिए मैंने उसी के लिए अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का निश्चय किया है।
I lament for want of a son and have no happiness. So I have resolved to perform the horse sacrifice for that purpose.
तदहं यष्टुमिच्छामि शास्त्रदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
ऋषिपुत्रप्रभावेन कामान्प्राप्स्यामि चाप्यहम् ॥
tadahaṃ yaṣṭumicchāmi śāstradṛṣṭena karmaṇā |
ṛṣiputraprabhāvena kāmānprāpsyāmi cāpyaham ||
मैं शास्त्रों में बताई विधि से यज्ञ करना चाहता हूँ, और ऋषिपुत्र के प्रभाव से मेरी इच्छाएँ पूरी होंगी।
I wish to sacrifice by the rites laid down in the shastras, and by the power of the sage's son I shall gain my wishes.
ततस्साध्विति तद्वाक्यं ब्राह्मणाः प्रत्यपूजयन् ।
वसिष्ठप्रमुखास्सर्वे पार्थिवस्य मुखाच्च्युतम् ॥
tatassādhviti tadvākyaṃ brāhmaṇāḥ pratyapūjayan |
vasiṣṭhapramukhāssarve pārthivasya mukhāccyutam ||
वसिष्ठ आदि सभी ब्राह्मणों ने राजा के मुख से निकले वचनों की सराहना की और कहा: बहुत अच्छा।
All the brahmins, led by Vasishtha, praised the words that came from the king's mouth, saying: Well said.
ऋष्यशृङ्गपुरोगाश्च प्रत्यूचुर्नृपतिं तदा ।
सम्भारास्सम्भ्रियन्तां ते तुरगश्च विमुच्यताम् ॥
ṛṣyaśṛṅgapurogāśca pratyūcurnṛpatiṃ tadā |
sambhārāssambhriyantāṃ te turagaśca vimucyatām ||
फिर ऋष्यशृंग को आगे करके उन्होंने राजा को उत्तर दिया: सामग्री जुटाई जाए और घोड़ा छोड़ा जाए।
Then, with Rishyashringa at their head, they replied to the king: Let the materials be gathered and the horse be released.
सर्वथा प्राप्स्यसे पुत्रांश्चत्वारोऽमितविक्रमान् ।
यस्य ते धार्मिकी बुद्धिरियं पुत्रार्थमागता ॥
sarvathā prāpsyase putrāṃścatvāro'mitavikramān |
yasya te dhārmikī buddhiriyaṃ putrārthamāgatā ||
आपको अवश्य चार अपार पराक्रमी पुत्र प्राप्त होंगे, क्योंकि पुत्र के लिए आपके मन में यह धर्मसंकल्प आया है।
You will surely gain four sons of boundless valour, since this righteous resolve has come to you for the sake of sons.
ततः प्रीतोऽभवद्राजा श्रुत्वा तद्विजभाषितम् ।
अमात्यांश्चाब्रवीद्राजा हर्षेणेदं शुभाक्षरम् ॥
tataḥ prīto'bhavadrājā śrutvā tadvijabhāṣitam |
amātyāṃścābravīdrājā harṣeṇedaṃ śubhākṣaram ||
ब्राह्मणों की बात सुनकर राजा प्रसन्न हुए, और हर्षपूर्वक मंत्रियों से ये शुभ वचन कहे।
Hearing what the brahmins said, the king was delighted, and joyfully spoke these auspicious words to his ministers.
गुरूणां वचनाच्छीघ्रं सम्भारास्सम्भ्रियन्तु मे ।
समर्थाधिष्ठितश्चाश्वस्सोपाध्यायो विमुच्यताम् ॥
gurūṇāṃ vacanācchīghraṃ sambhārāssambhriyantu me |
samarthādhiṣṭhitaścāśvassopādhyāyo vimucyatām ||
मेरे गुरुओं के कहे अनुसार शीघ्र सामग्री जुटाई जाए, और समर्थ रक्षकों और उपाध्याय के साथ घोड़ा छोड़ा जाए।
As my teachers say, let the materials be gathered quickly, and let the horse be released, guarded by able men and attended by a priest.
सरय्वाश्चोत्तरे तीरे यज्ञभूमिर्विधीयताम् ।
शान्तयश्चाभिवर्धन्तां यथाकल्पं यथाविधि ॥
sarayvāścottare tīre yajñabhūmirvidhīyatām |
śāntayaścābhivardhantāṃ yathākalpaṃ yathāvidhi ||
सरयू के उत्तरी तट पर यज्ञभूमि तैयार की जाए, और नियम तथा विधि के अनुसार शांति कर्म किए जाएँ।
Let the sacrificial ground be prepared on the northern bank of the Sarayu, and let the rites for peace be performed in due order and according to the rules.
शक्यः प्राप्तुमयं यज्ञस्सर्वेणापि महीक्षिता ।
नापराधो भवेत्कष्टो यद्यस्मिन्क्रतुसत्तमे ॥
śakyaḥ prāptumayaṃ yajñassarveṇāpi mahīkṣitā |
nāparādho bhavetkaṣṭo yadyasminkratusattame ||
यह यज्ञ कोई भी राजा कर सकता है, यदि इस श्रेष्ठ यज्ञ में कोई गंभीर भूल न हो।
Any king can perform this sacrifice, provided no grave error is made in this greatest of rites.
छिद्रं हि मृगयन्तेऽत्र विद्वांसो ब्रह्मराक्षसाः ।
निहतस्य च यज्ञस्य सद्यः कर्ता विनश्यति ॥
chidraṃ hi mṛgayante'tra vidvāṃso brahmarākṣasāḥ |
nihatasya ca yajñasya sadyaḥ kartā vinaśyati ||
क्योंकि विद्वान ब्रह्मराक्षस इसमें छिद्र खोजते रहते हैं, और यज्ञ नष्ट होने पर यज्ञकर्ता तुरंत नष्ट हो जाता है।
For learned brahmarakshasas look for a flaw here, and when a sacrifice is ruined the one who performs it perishes at once.
तद्यथा विधिपूर्वं मे क्रतुरेष समाप्यते ।
तथा विधानं क्रियतां समर्थाः करणेष्विह ॥
tadyathā vidhipūrvaṃ me kratureṣa samāpyate |
tathā vidhānaṃ kriyatāṃ samarthāḥ karaṇeṣviha ||
इसलिए ऐसी व्यवस्था करो कि मेरा यह यज्ञ विधिपूर्वक पूर्ण हो। तुम ऐसे कार्य करने में समर्थ हो।
So arrange everything so that my sacrifice is completed exactly according to the rules. You are able in carrying out such work.
तथेति च ततस्सर्वे मन्त्रिणः प्रत्यपूजयन् ।
पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य तद्वाक्यं यथाज्ञप्तमकुर्वत ॥
tatheti ca tatassarve mantriṇaḥ pratyapūjayan |
pārthivendrasya tadvākyaṃ yathājñaptamakurvata ||
सब मंत्रियों ने राजा के वचनों का सम्मान किया, कहा: ऐसा ही होगा, और आज्ञा के अनुसार कार्य किया।
All the ministers honoured the king's words, said: So be it, and did as they were commanded.
ततो द्विजास्ते धर्मज्ञमस्तुवन्पार्थिवर्षभम् ।
अनुज्ञातास्ततस्सर्वे पुनर्जग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥
tato dvijāste dharmajñamastuvanpārthivarṣabham |
anujñātāstatassarve punarjagmuryathāgatam ||
फिर ब्राह्मणों ने उन धर्मज्ञ नृपश्रेष्ठ की प्रशंसा की और उनकी अनुमति लेकर जैसे आए थे वैसे लौट गए।
Then the brahmins praised that best of kings who knew dharma and, with his leave, returned as they had come.
गतेष्वथ द्विजाग्य्रेषु मन्त्रिणस्तान्नराधिपः ।
विसर्जयित्वा स्वं वेश्म प्रविवेश महाद्युतिः ॥
gateṣvatha dvijāgyreṣu mantriṇastānnarādhipaḥ |
visarjayitvā svaṃ veśma praviveśa mahādyutiḥ ||
श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों के जाने के बाद तेजस्वी राजा ने मंत्रियों को विदा किया और अपने महल में चले गए।
When the best of brahmins had gone, the radiant king dismissed his ministers and entered his own palace.
