Why is Kedarnath sacred?
Kedarnath is one of the holiest shrines of Shiva, set high in the Garhwal Himalayas at over 3,500 metres, counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas and the four Char Dham of Uttarakhand. The present stone temple stands before a backdrop of snow peaks, reached by a long trek through the mountains, and is open only in the warmer months.
Tradition holds that the Pandavas sought Shiva here to absolve the sins of the Kurukshetra war; eluding them in the form of a bull, Shiva left his hump at Kedarnath, worshipped ever since as the jyotirlinga.
