The story of Charumati

The vrat katha, traditionally attributed to the Skanda Purana and narrated by Shiva to Parvati, tells of Charumati, a devoted wife in the city of Kundinapura who cared selflessly for her husband and his parents. Pleased with her devotion, Lakshmi appeared to her in a dream and asked her to worship Varalakshmi on the Friday before Shravana Purnima. Charumati shared the dream with the women of the town, and together they performed the puja. When they finished, they found themselves adorned with gold ornaments and their homes filled with plenty. Since then, women keep the vrat in the same spirit of devotion and sharing.

How Varalakshmi Vrat is observed

  • Kalash: a silver or brass pot filled with rice or water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut, is dressed as the goddess with a sari, a face of Lakshmi and jewellery.
  • Puja: the goddess is invoked with the Lakshmi Ashtottara and offered flowers, turmeric, kumkum, fruit and sweets such as payasam and holige.
  • Sacred thread: women tie a yellow thread (dora) with nine knots on the right wrist as a sign of the vow.
  • Tamboolam: married women are invited home and given betel leaves, turmeric, kumkum, bangles and sweets.
  • Prayers: the aarti Om Jai Lakshmi Mata and the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam are recited.

The meaning of the vrat

Varalakshmi Vrat links prosperity to devotion and generosity: Charumati’s blessing comes only after she shares it with others. Its blessings are spoken of as tradition holds them. See all festivals on the Hindu festival calendar.
