Baisakhi 2027 falls on Wednesday, 14 April, the day of Mesha Sankranti, when the Sun enters Aries and the solar New Year begins. Across India the same day carries many names: Baisakhi (Vaisakhi) in Punjab, Vishu in Kerala, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Rongali Bihu in Assam, Pana Sankranti in Odisha and Pohela Boishakh in Bengal (often a day later). It is a harvest festival, a new year and, for Sikhs, the founding day of the Khalsa.

Baisakhi and Vishu 2027 date

Baisakhi and Vishu 2027 are on Wednesday, 14 April 2027. In 2026 they also fell on Tuesday, 14 April. Because the date follows the Sun’s entry into Mesha rather than the Moon, it stays on 13 or 14 April almost every year.

Why Baisakhi and Vishu are celebrated

Mesha Sankranti begins the solar year, honoured as a day sacred to Surya. In Punjab and Haryana it is the harvest of the winter wheat, celebrated with gratitude after months of work. In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib on Baisakhi, which is why the day is central to the Sikh calendar.

In Kerala, Vishu is welcomed with the Vishukkani, an arrangement of auspicious things seen first thing in the morning, centred on an image of Krishna. Tradition says that what you see first on Vishu shapes the year, so the family’s eyes open to rice, gold, fruit, a mirror, a lamp and golden konna (laburnum) flowers.

How the day is celebrated

  • Punjab: fairs, bhangra and gidda, visits to gurdwaras and nagar kirtan processions.
  • Kerala (Vishu): Vishukkani at dawn, Vishu kaineettam (gifts of money from elders to children), the Vishu sadya feast and fireworks.
  • Tamil Nadu (Puthandu): kolam at the doorway and mango pachadi of sweet, sour and bitter tastes.
  • Assam (Rongali Bihu): Bihu dance and songs, new clothes and the gamosa gift.
  • Everywhere: a holy bath, prayers to the Sun and charity at the start of the new year.

The meaning of the festival

Baisakhi and Vishu greet the new year with thanks for the harvest and hope for what is ahead. Starting the year by seeing and sharing auspicious things is a way of choosing abundance and goodwill. See every festival on the Hindu festival calendar.
