mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo 'stv akarmaṇi
Word by word
karmaṇi — in prescribed duties; eva — certainly; adhikāraḥ — right; te — your; mā — never; phaleṣu — in the fruits; kadācana — at any time; mā — never; karma-phala — in the results of work; hetuḥ — cause; bhūḥ — become; mā — never; te — your; saṅgaḥ — attachment; astu — let there be; akarmaṇi — in inaction.
Translation
You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to inaction.
Hindi
तेरा कर्म करने में ही अधिकार है, उसके फलों में कभी नहीं। इसलिए तू कर्मों के फल का हेतु मत बन और तेरी अकर्म में भी आसक्ति न हो।
Commentary
This is among the most quoted verses of the Gita. Krishna sets out the principle of nishkama karma — action performed as duty, without craving for its reward. It is not a counsel of indifference but of equanimity: do the work that is yours to do, and release your grip on its outcome.
