Nandaka

नन्दक

Nandaka is the sword of Vishnu. The Vishnu Purana explains it as vidya, true knowledge, sheathed in the scabbard of ignorance. Vishnu is called Nandaki in the Vishnu Sahasranama, and the Tirumala tradition holds the poet Annamacharya to be an embodiment of the sword.

What is the Nandaka?

Nandaka is the divine sword of Vishnu, named in hymns and Puranas as one of his five weapons. Its name means the one that brings joy (from nanda).

It is seldom shown in four-armed images, but it is held by eight-armed forms of Vishnu, by Vishnu on Garuda in battle, and by the future avatar Kalki.

The sword in the Vishnu Purana

Among the ornaments and weapons of Vishnu described in the Vishnu Purana (Book 1, ch. 22), the sword Nandaka has one of the clearest meanings. It is vidya, true knowledge, and its scabbard is avidya, ignorance. The sword is kept sheathed in ignorance until knowledge is drawn out of it. For devotees the image is simple to hold in mind: the blade that frees the soul is already within reach, waiting to be drawn.

Nandaka and the poet Annamacharya

The Tirumala tradition in Andhra Pradesh holds that the fifteenth-century poet-saint Annamacharya, who composed thousands of songs to Venkateswara, was born as a portion of Nandaka, the sword of the Lord. His songs, sung daily at Tirumala, are thus said to carry the sword’s power to cut through ignorance.

In art and hymns

The sword appears mostly in eight-armed and martial forms of Vishnu, often paired with a shield, and in images of Kalki, the avatar who is expected to ride out with a blazing sword at the end of the age. The closing verse of the Vishnu Sahasranama names Vishnu Nandaki, the bearer of Nandaka.
