Kailash: Origin

कैलाश

Kailash is the sacred mountain in Tibet that Hindus revere as the abode of Shiva and Parvati. About 6,638 metres high and never climbed, it is circled by pilgrims on a 52-kilometre route, and Lake Mansarovar lies at its foot. It is holy to Buddhists, Jains and Bon followers too.

Where did it come from?

The texts tell different stories.

Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana

The abode of Shiva

The Puranas describe Kailash as Shiva's home, where he lives with Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Nandi and the ganas.

Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda

Ravana lifts the mountain

Ravana tries to uproot Kailash; Shiva presses it down with his toe until Ravana sings his praise.
