कथा
With Ramayana: Part 1 in theatres, the faces on screen are new but the characters are thousands of years old. Ramayana characters explained here are drawn from the Valmiki Ramayana, not from the film, so you can see who each figure is in the original epic. Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, Yash plays Ravana and Sai Pallavi plays Sita; below is who those roles really are, and the people around them.
Ramayana characters explained: the heroes of Ayodhya
Rama is the eldest son of King Dasharatha and, in Valmiki’s account, an incarnation of Vishnu born to restore dharma. Valmiki describes him as truthful, self-controlled and devoted to his word, which is why he accepts fourteen years of exile rather than let his father break a promise. Lakshmana, his younger brother, follows him into the forest and guards him and Sita day and night. Bharata, the son of Kaikeyi, refuses the throne he is offered and rules only in Rama’s name, keeping Rama’s sandals on the seat of power.
Sita: daughter of the earth
Sita is found by King Janaka of Mithila in a furrow of a ploughed field, which is why she is called Bhumija, daughter of the earth. She marries Rama after he breaks Shiva’s bow, chooses exile with him, and is carried off to Lanka by Ravana. Valmiki presents her as steady and fearless in captivity: she refuses Ravana for nearly a year and never wavers. She is worshipped as an incarnation of Lakshmi.
Ravana: the scholar-king of Lanka
Ravana, son of the sage Vishrava, is the ten-headed king of Lanka. Valmiki does not draw him as a simple monster. He is a great devotee of Shiva, a learned ruler and a powerful warrior who won boons through long austerity. His fault is pride and desire: he abducts Sita to avenge his sister Shurpanakha and refuses every chance to return her. That mix of greatness and ruin is what makes him one of the epic’s most discussed figures.
Hanuman and the allies of Kishkindha
Hanuman, son of Anjana and the wind god Vayu, is the minister of the vanara king Sugriva and the most devoted servant of Rama. He crosses the ocean to find Sita, burns Lanka and later carries the herb mountain to save Lakshmana. Sugriva, Angada and the bear king Jambavan complete the army that marches south. In early publicity the role of Hanuman was linked to Sunny Deol.
The people who set the story moving
Several smaller roles carry huge weight. Queen Kaikeyi asks for Rama’s exile after her maid Manthara turns her against him. Shurpanakha’s humiliation in the forest gives Ravana his motive. Maricha becomes the golden deer that lures Rama away. Vibhishana, Ravana’s own brother, crosses over to Rama’s side, and Kumbhakarna, the giant who sleeps for months, fights for Lanka out of loyalty even though he thinks Ravana is wrong.
Why the characters still matter
Each figure in the Ramayana stands for a choice about duty. Rama keeps his word, Bharata gives up power, Lakshmana gives up comfort, and Hanuman serves without asking for anything. Ravana shows how great gifts can be ruined by pride. That is why the same story keeps returning to the screen, and why reading the characters in the original adds depth to any film.
