कथा
Dev Diwali 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November, the full moon of Kartik, known as Kartik Purnima. On this night the ghats of Varanasi glow with lakhs of earthen lamps, because tradition holds that the gods themselves come down to the Ganga to celebrate. The festival honours Shiva‘s victory over the demon Tripurasura, which is why the day is also called Tripuri Purnima. Here is the date, the story and how the day is observed.
Dev Diwali 2026 date
Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali fall on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, fifteen days after Diwali. Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated on the same day. The Purnima tithi can begin the evening before in some cities, so check a local panchang for the auspicious time of the bath and the lamp offering.
The story of Shiva and Tripurasura
The Shiva Purana and the Karna Parva of the Mahabharata tell of the three sons of the demon Taraka: Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha and Vidyunmali. Through severe penance they won a boon from Brahma: three flying cities, one of gold in heaven, one of silver in the sky and one of iron on earth, built by the architect Maya. The cities could be destroyed only when they aligned in a single line, and only by a single arrow.
Protected by this boon, the brothers terrorised the three worlds. The gods turned to Shiva. The earth became his chariot, the sun and moon its wheels, Brahma its charioteer, Mount Meru his bow, the serpent Vasuki its string, and Vishnu himself the arrow. When the three cities aligned, Shiva released one arrow and burned all three to ash. He became Tripurari, the enemy of Tripura, and the gods lit lamps in celebration. That celebration is remembered as Dev Diwali, the Diwali of the gods.
Other stories tied to Kartik Purnima
Several traditions meet on this full moon. Many Vaishnavas observe it as the day Vishnu took his first avatar, Matsya, the fish, to save the Vedas and the sage Manu from the great flood. In South India, Kartik Deepam is linked to Shiva appearing as an endless pillar of light. The day also completes the month-long Kartik vrat and the Tulsi Vivah season that begins after Tulsi Vivah.
How Kartik Purnima is observed
- Kartik snan: a holy bath before sunrise in the Ganga, Yamuna, Pushkar lake or any river; it is considered the most meritorious bath of the year.
- Deep daan: floating lamps on the river and lighting rows of diyas at home and in temples.
- Puja: worship of Shiva and Vishnu, and the reading of the Satyanarayan katha in many homes.
- Charity: giving food, clothes and lamps; tradition counts gifts on this day as especially fruitful.
- Fairs: the Pushkar fair in Rajasthan and the Sonepur fair in Bihar peak around this full moon.
Dev Deepawali in Varanasi
Varanasi’s Dev Deepawali is one of India’s most striking sights. As evening falls, more than eighty ghats along the Ganga are lined with diyas, the Ganga aarti is performed on a grand scale, and boats drift past fireworks and floating lamps. Pilgrims believe the gods descend to bathe in the river on this night.
The meaning of Dev Diwali
Dev Diwali carries the message of Diwali to the heavens: light conquers darkness, and even boons won by pride cannot save those who torment the world. Lighting a lamp on Kartik Purnima is a way of joining the gods’ own celebration.
